Genesis32

And Jacob went on his way, and messengers of God met him.

And Jacob said, when he saw them, “This is the camp of God”; and he called the name of that place Mahanaim.

And Jacob sent messengers before his face to Esau his brother, to the land of Seir, the field of Edom.

And he commanded them, saying, “Thus you shall say to my lord, to Esau: ‘Thus says your slave Jacob: With Laban I have sojourned, and I have delayed until now.

And I have come to own oxen and donkeys, flocks, slaves and female slaves; and I have sent to tell my lord, to find favor in your eyes.’”

And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother, to Esau; and he too is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”

And Jacob was greatly afraid, and he was in straits; and he divided the people who were with him, and the flock and the cattle and the camels, into two camps.

And he said, “If Esau comes to the one camp and strikes it, then the camp that is left will become an escaped remnant.”

And Jacob said, “O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, O Yahweh, who said to me, ‘Return to your land and to your birthplace, and I will do good with you’:

I am too insignificant for all the loyal love and for all the stability that you have done with your slave; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I have become two camps.

Deliver me, please, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I am afraid of him, lest he come and strike me, mother together with children.

And you said, ‘I will surely do good with you, and I will make your seed like the sand of the sea, which will not be counted for multitude.’”

And he lodged there that night, and took, from what came into his hand, a grain offering for Esau his brother:

Two hundred she-goats and twenty he-goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,

Thirty nursing camels with their young, forty heifers and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten donkey foals.

And he put them into the hand of his servants, herd by herd, each by itself, and he said to his servants, "Pass over before my face, and set a space between herd and herd."

And he commanded the first, saying, "When Esau my brother meets you and asks you, 'Whose are you, and where are you going, and whose are these before your face?'

then you will say, 'To your servant, to Jacob: it is a grain offering sent to my lord, to Esau; and look, he too is behind us.'"

And he also commanded the second, and also the third, and also all those going behind the herds, saying, "According to this word you will speak to Esau when you find him,

and you will say, 'Also, look, your servant Jacob is behind us.' For he said, 'I will cover his face with the grain offering going before my face, and afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will lift up my face.'"

And the grain offering passed over before his face, and he lodged that night in the camp.

And he rose that night, and took his two wives and his two female slaves and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.

And he took them and brought them across the wadi, and brought across what was his.

And Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until the dawn came up.

And he saw that he could not prevail against him, and he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was dislocated as he wrestled with him.

And he said, "Let me go, for the dawn has come up." But he said, "I will not let you go unless you bless me."

And he said to him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Jacob."

He said, "Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have persevered with God and with people, and you have prevailed."

And Jacob asked, and said, "Tell me your name, please." But he said, "Why is it that you ask for my name?" And he blessed him there.

And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: "For I have seen God face to face, and my being was delivered."

And the sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel, and he was limping on his thigh.

Therefore the children of Israel do not eat the sinew of the hip that is on the hollow of the thigh, to this day; for he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh at the sinew of the hip.
