Genesis28

Isaac called to Jacob and blessed him, and commanded him and said to him, "You must not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan.

Rise, go to Paddan Aram, to the house of Bethuel the father of your mother, and take for yourself from there a wife from the daughters of Laban the brother of your mother.

May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, and you will become a company of peoples.

And may he give you the blessing of Abraham, to you and to your seed with you, so that you may take possession of the land of your temporary abodes, which God gave to Abraham."

Isaac sent Jacob off, and he went to Paddan Aram, to Laban the son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, the mother of Jacob and Esau.

Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him to Paddan Aram to take for himself a wife from there, and that in blessing him he had commanded him, saying, "You must not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan,"

and that Jacob had listened to his father and to his mother and had gone to Paddan Aram.

Esau saw that the daughters of Canaan were evil in the eyes of Isaac his father.

Esau went to Ishmael and took Mahalath, the daughter of Ishmael the son of Abraham, the sister of Nebaioth, as a wife for himself, in addition to his wives.

Jacob went forth from Beer-sheba and went to Haran.

He came upon a place and spent the night there, because the sun had gone in; he took one of the stones of that place, put it at his head, and lay down in that place.

He dreamed, and look, a ramp stationed on the land, and its head touched the skies, and look, the messengers of God were coming up and coming down on it.

And look, Yahweh was stationed over it, and he said, "I am Yahweh, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. The land on which you are lying, to you I will give it and to your seed."

Your seed will be like the dust of the land, and you will burst out toward the sea and the east, the north and the south, and all the families of the ground will be blessed in you and in your seed.

And look, I am with you, and I will keep you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this ground, for I will not abandon you until I have done what I have spoken to you."

Jacob woke from his sleep and said, "Surely Yahweh is in this place, and I did not know it."

He was afraid and said, "How awesome is this place! This is nothing but the house of God, and this is the gate of the skies."

Jacob rose early in the morning and took the stone that he had put at his head, and set up it as a pillar, and poured oil over its head.

He called the name of that place Beth-el; but Luz was the name of the city at first.

Jacob vowed a vow, saying, "If God will be with me and will keep me on this road I am walking, and will give me food to eat and clothing to wear,

and I return in wholeness to the house of my father, then Yahweh will become my God.

And this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be the house of God, and of all that you give me, I will surely give a tenth of it to you."
