It happened that Isaac was old, and his eyes grew too dim to see. He called Esau his older son and said to him, "My son." He said to him, "Here I am."
He said, "Look now, I am old; I do not know the day of my death.
And now, please take up your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and hunt me some game.
And make me delicacies, such as I love, and bring them to me, that I may eat, so that my being may bless you before I die."
Rebekah was listening while Isaac spoke to Esau his son. And Esau went to the field to hunt game and bring it.
Rebekah said to Jacob her son, saying, "Look, I heard your father speaking to Esau your brother, saying,
'Bring me game and make me delicacies, and I will eat, and I will bless you before the face of Yahweh before my death.'
And now, my son, listen to my voice in what I command you.
Go, please, to the flock and take me from there two good young goats of the she-goats, and I will make them delicacies for your father, such as he loves.
You will bring it to your father, and he will eat, so that he may bless you before his death."
Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, "Look, Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man.
Perhaps my father will feel me, and I will be in his eyes like a mocker, and I will bring a curse on myself and not a blessing."
His mother said to him, "Your curse be on me, my son; only listen to my voice, and go, fetch them for me."
He went and took them and brought them to his mother, and his mother made delicacies, such as his father loved.
Rebekah took the clothes of Esau her older son, the desirable ones that were with her in the house, and clothed Jacob her young son in them.
And with the skins of the young goats of the she-goats she clothed his hands and the smooth part of his neck.
She put the delicacies and the food she had prepared into the hand of Jacob her son.
He came to his father and said, "My father." He said, "Here I am. Who are you, my son?"
Jacob said to his father, "I am Esau your firstborn; I have done as you spoke to me. Rise, please, sit and eat some of my game, so that your being may bless me."
Isaac said to his son, "What is this, that you have hurried to find it, my son?" He said, "Because Yahweh your God made it happen before my face."
Isaac said to Jacob, "Come near, please, and let me feel you, my son, whether you are my son Esau or not."
Jacob drew near to Isaac his father, and he felt him and said, "The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau."
He did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like the hands of Esau his brother, and he blessed him.
He said, "Are you my son Esau?" He said, "I am."
He said, "Bring it near to me, and let me eat some of my son's game, so that my being may bless you." He brought it near to him and he ate; and he brought him wine, and he drank.
His father Isaac said to him, "Come near, please, and kiss me, my son."
He came near and kissed him, and he smelled the odor of his garments and blessed him. He said, "See, the odor of my son is like the odor of a field that Yahweh has blessed.
May God give you from the dew of the skies and from the fatness of the land, and a multitude of grain and new wine.
Peoples will serve you, and communities will bow down to you; be lord to your brothers, and the children of your mother will bow down to you. Those who curse you are cursed, and those who bless you are blessed.
It happened, just as Isaac finished blessing Jacob, and it came about: Jacob had only just gone out from the face of Isaac his father when Esau his brother came in from his hunt.
He also made delicacies and brought them to his father, and he said to his father, "Let my father rise and eat from the game of his son, so that your being may bless me."
Isaac his father said to him, "Who are you?" He said, "I am your son, your firstborn, Esau."
Isaac shuddered with a great shuddering, exceedingly so, and said, "Who then is he that hunted game and brought it to me, and I ate of everything before you came, and I blessed him? He also will be blessed."
When Esau heard the words of his father, he cried out with a cry, great and bitter exceedingly, and said to his father, "Bless me, me also, my father."
He said, "Your brother came with deceit and took your blessing."
He said, "Is that why his name was called Jacob? He has caught me by the heel these two times: he took my firstborn's right, and now look, he has taken my blessing." He said, "Have you not reserved a blessing for me?"
Isaac answered and said to Esau, "See, I have appointed him lord over you, and all his brothers I have given to him as slaves, and with grain and new wine I have sustained him. And for you, what then can I do, my son?"
Esau said to his father, "Is there only one blessing for you, my father? Bless me, me also, my father." And Esau lifted up his voice and wept.
Isaac his father answered and said to him, "Look, away from the fatness of the land will be your dwelling, and away from the dew of the skies above.
By your sword you will live, and your brother you will serve; but it will be that as you roam, you will tear his yoke off from your neck."
Esau bore a grudge against Jacob over the blessing with which his father had blessed him, and Esau said in his heart, "The days of mourning for my father will draw near, and I will kill Jacob my brother."
The words of Esau her older son were told to Rebekah, and she sent and called Jacob her younger son and said to him, "Look, Esau your brother is comforting himself over you by killing you.
And now, my son, listen to my voice, and rise; flee for yourself to Laban my brother at Haran.
And you will dwell with him a few days, until the anger of your brother returns,
until the anger of your brother turns back from you and he forgets what you did to him; then I will send and fetch you from there. Why should I also be bereaved of you two in one day?"
Rebekah said to Isaac, "I loathe my life because of the daughters of Heth. If Jacob takes a wife from the daughters of Heth like these, from the daughters of the land, why should I have life?"
