And Abraham was old, come in days; and Yahweh blessed Abraham in all.
And Abraham said to his slave, the old of his house, who rules in all that belonged to him, Put, please, your hand under my thigh;
and I will make you swear in Yahweh, the God of the heavens and the God of the land, that you will not take a woman to my son from the daughters of the Canaanite, which I dwell in his midst;
but to my land and to my homeland you will go, and take a wife for my son, for Isaac.
And the slave said to him, Perhaps the woman will not be willing to go after me to this land; shall I really bring back your son to the land from which you went out?
And Abraham said to him, Guard yourself, lest you take my son back there.
Yahweh, the God of the heavens, who took me from the house of my father and from the land of my homeland, and who spoke to me, and who swore an oath to me, saying, To your seed I will give this land, he will send his messenger to your face, and you will take a woman to my son from there.
And if the woman is not willing to go after you, then you will be free from this oath of mine; only do not take my son back there.
And the slave put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his lord, and swore an oath to him over this word.
And the slave took ten camels from the camels of his lord and went; and every good thing of his lord was in his hand. He rose and went to Aram Naharaim, to the city of Nahor.
And he made the camels kneel outside the city, at the well of the waters, at the time of evening, at the time when the women who draw water go out.
And he said, Yahweh, God of my lord Abraham, please make it happen before me today, and do loyal love with my lord Abraham.
Look, I am standing by the spring of the waters, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water.
Let it be that the young woman to whom I say, Tilt your jar, please, so that I may drink, and who says, Drink, and I will water your camels also—her you have appointed for your slave Isaac; and by her I will know that you have done loyal love with my lord.
And it happened that he had not yet finished speaking, when look, Rebekah was coming out, who had been born to Bethuel the son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, the brother of Abraham, with her jar on her shoulder.
The young woman was very good to look at, a virgin, and no man had known her. She went down to the spring, filled her jar, and came up.
The slave ran to meet her and said, Please let me drink a little water from your jar.
She said, Drink, my lord. She hurried, lowered her jar onto her hand, and gave him a drink.
When she had finished giving him a drink, she said, I will draw water for your camels also, until they have finished drinking.
She hurried and emptied her jar into the trough, and ran again to the well to draw water, and drew for all his camels.
The man was gazing at her in silence, to know whether Yahweh had made his way successful or not.
And it happened, when the camels had finished drinking, that the man took a gold nose-ring, a beka in weight, and two bracelets on her hands, ten of gold in weight.
He said, Whose daughter are you? Tell me, please: is there room in the house of your father for us to spend the night?
She said to him, I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor.
She said to him, We have both straw and plenty of fodder, and also room to spend the night.
The man bowed low and bowed down to Yahweh.
He said, Blessed be Yahweh, the God of my lord Abraham, who has not forsaken his loyal love and his stability toward my lord. As for me, on the way Yahweh has led me to the house of my lord's brothers.
The young woman ran and told her mother's household about these words.
Rebekah had a brother whose name was Laban. Laban ran to the man outside, to the spring.
And it happened, when he saw the nose-ring and the bracelets on his sister's hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, This is how the man spoke to me—he went to the man, and look, he was standing by the camels at the spring.
He said, Come in, you blessed of Yahweh. Why are you standing outside, when I have turned and made ready the house and a place for the camels?
The man came to the house, and he ungirded the camels, and gave straw and fodder to the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him.
And it was set before him to eat, but he said, I will not eat until I have spoken my words. And he said, Speak.
He said, I am Abraham's slave.
Yahweh has blessed my lord exceedingly, and he has become great; he has given him flock and cattle, silver and gold, male slaves and female slaves, camels and donkeys.
Sarah, the wife of my lord, bore a son to my lord after her old age, and he has given him all that he has.
And my lord made me swear an oath, saying, You must not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell;
Rather, you must go to my father's house and to my family, and take a wife for my son.
And I said to my lord, Perhaps the woman will not go after me.
And he said to me, Yahweh, before whom I have walked, will send his messenger with you and make your way successful; and you will take a wife for my son from my family and from my father's house.
Then you will be free from my oath when you come to my family; and if they will not give her to you, then you will be clear of my oath.
And I came today to the spring and I said, Yahweh, God of my lord Abraham, if you are now making my way successful, the way that I am going on,
Look, I am standing by the spring of the water; and it will be that the young woman who comes out to draw water, to whom I say, Please give me a drink, a little water from your jar,
and she says to me, You drink, and I will also draw water for your camels; let her be the woman whom Yahweh has appointed for the son of my lord.
I had not yet finished speaking in my heart when, look, Rebekah was coming out with her jar on her shoulder; she went down to the spring and drew water, and I said to her, Please give me a drink.
She hurried and lowered her jar from her and said, Drink, and I will water your camels too; and I drank, and she watered the camels too.
And I asked her, and I said, Whose daughter are you? And she said, The daughter of Bethuel, son of Nahor, whom Milcah bore to him. And I put the ring on her nose and the bracelets on her hands.
I bowed my head and bowed down to Yahweh, and I blessed Yahweh, the God of my lord Abraham, who led me on a sure way to take the daughter of my lord's brother for his son.
And now, if you are acting with loyal love and faithfulness toward my lord, tell me; and if not, tell me, so that I may turn to the right or to the left.
And Laban and Bethuel answered and said, The word has gone out from Yahweh; we cannot speak to you bad or good.
Look, Rebekah is before your face; take her and go, and let her be a wife for the son of your lord, as Yahweh has spoken.
When Abraham's slave heard their words, he bowed down to the land before Yahweh.
And the slave brought out articles of silver and articles of gold, and garments, and gave them to Rebekah; and precious things he gave to her brother and to her mother.
And they ate and drank, he and the men who were with him, and stayed the night; then they rose in the morning, and he said, Send me away to my lord.
Her brother and her mother said, Let the girl dwell with us a few days, or ten; after that she may go.
He said to them, Do not delay me, now that Yahweh has made my way successful; send me away, and let me go to my lord.
They said, Let us call the girl and ask what her own mouth says.
They called Rebekah and said to her, Will you go with this man? And she said, I will go.
So they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham's slave and his men.
They blessed Rebekah and said to her, Our sister, may you become thousands of ten thousands, and may your seed take possession of the gate of those who hate them.
Rebekah and her girls rose, and rode on the camels, and went after the man; and the slave took Rebekah and went.
Now Isaac had come from going to Beer-lahai-roi, and he was dwelling in the land of the Negev.
Isaac went out to roam about in the field at the turning of evening; he lifted up his eyes and saw, and look, camels coming.
Rebekah lifted up her eyes and saw Isaac, and she fell from the camel.
She said to the slave, Who is that man walking in the field to meet us? And the slave said, He is my lord; and she took the veil and covered herself.
And the slave recounted to Isaac all the words of what he had done.
Isaac brought her to the tent of Sarah, his mother, and he took Rebekah, and she became his wife, and he loved her; and Isaac was comforted after his mother.
