And Yahweh appeared to him by the terebinths of Mamre, as he was sitting at the opening of the tent in the heat of the day.
He lifted up his eyes and saw, and look, three men standing beside him. When he saw, he ran to meet them from the opening of the tent and bowed down to the land.
And he said, My lord, if please I have found favor in your eyes, please do not go on past your servant.
Let a little water be brought, please, and wash your feet, and lean back under the tree.
And let me take a morsel of bread, and sustain your heart; afterward you may pass on, for that is why you have passed by your servant. And they said, Do so, just as you have said.
And Abraham hurried to the tent, to Sarah, and said, Quick! Three seahs of flour, of fine flour; knead it and make cakes.
And Abraham ran to the herd, took a young one of the herd, tender and good, and gave it to the boy, who hurried to prepare it.
And he took curds and milk, and the young one of the herd that he had prepared, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they ate.
And they said to him, Where is Sarah your wife? And he said, Look, in the tent.
And he said, I will surely return to you when the time comes alive, and look, Sarah your wife will have a son. And Sarah was listening at the opening of the tent, and it was behind him.
And Abraham and Sarah were old, having come on in days; the way of women had ceased to be with Sarah.
And Sarah laughed outright within herself, saying, After I am worn out, shall I have pleasure, when my lord is old?
And Yahweh said to Abraham, Why did Sarah laugh outright, saying, Will I really bear, now that I am old?
Is any word too wonderful for Yahweh? At the appointed time I will return to you, when the time comes alive, and Sarah will have a son.
But Sarah denied it, saying, I did not laugh outright; for she was afraid. And he said, No, rather you did laugh outright.
And the men rose from there and looked down over the face of Sodom, while Abraham walked with them to send them off.
And Yahweh said, Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do?
And Abraham is surely to become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the land will be blessed in him.
For I have known him, so that he may command his sons and his household after him, and they will keep the way of Yahweh, doing righteousness and justice, so that Yahweh may bring on Abraham what he has spoken about him.
And Yahweh said, Truly, the outcry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and their sin, truly, is exceedingly heavy.
Please let me go down and see whether they have done completely according to the outcry that has come to me; and if not, let me know.
And the men turned from there and went toward Sodom, while Abraham still stood before the face of Yahweh.
And Abraham drew near and said, Will you even sweep away the righteous with the wicked?
Perhaps there are fifty righteous people in the midst of the city; will you even sweep it away, and not bear with the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people who are in its midst?
Far be it from you to act on such a word as this: to put to death the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous and the wicked are alike. Far be it from you! Will the judge of all the land not do justice?
And Yahweh said, If I find in Sodom fifty righteous people in the midst of the city, I will bear with the whole place for their sake.
And Abraham answered and said, See now, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord, I who am dust and ashes.
Perhaps the fifty righteous people will lack five; will you ruin the whole city for the five? And he said, I will not ruin it if I find forty-five there.
And he spoke to him once more, and said, Perhaps forty will be found there. And he said, I will not do it for the sake of the forty.
And he said, Please do not let the Lord burn with anger, and let me speak: perhaps thirty will be found there. And he said, I will not do it if I find thirty there.
And he said, See now, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord: perhaps twenty will be found there. And he said, I will not ruin it for the sake of the twenty.
And he said, Please do not let the Lord burn with anger, and let me speak just this once: perhaps ten will be found there. And he said, I will not ruin it for the sake of the ten.
And Yahweh went, as soon as he had finished speaking to Abraham; and Abraham returned to his place.
