And Sarai, the wife of Abram, had not borne him children; but she had a female slave, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.
And Sarai said to Abram, Look now, Yahweh has held me back from bearing children; please go in to my female slave; perhaps I will be built up through her. And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.
And Sarai, the wife of Abram, took Hagar the Egyptian, her female slave, at the end of ten years of Abram's dwelling in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram her husband to be his wife.
And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived; and she saw that she had conceived, and her mistress became slight in her eyes.
And Sarai said to Abram, The wrong done to me is on you! I set my female slave in your bosom, and she saw that she had conceived, and I became slight in her eyes. May Yahweh judge between me and you.
And Abram said to Sarai, "Look, your female slave is in your hand; do to her what is good in your eyes." And Sarai afflicted her, and she fled from her face.
And the messenger of Yahweh found her by the spring of the waters in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to Shur.
And he said, Hagar, female slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going? And she said, I am fleeing from the face of Sarai my mistress.
And the messenger of Yahweh said to her, "Return to your mistress, and humble yourself under her hands."
And the messenger of Yahweh said to her, I will surely multiply your seed, and it will not be counted because of its multitude.
And the messenger of Yahweh said to her, Look, you are pregnant and will bear a son, and you will call his name Ishmael, for Yahweh has heard your affliction.
And he will be a wild donkey of a man: his hand against everyone, and the hand of everyone against him; and he will dwell facing all his brothers.
And she called the name of Yahweh, who spoke to her, You are the God of seeing; for she said, Have I even here seen the back of the one who sees me?
Therefore people called the well Beer-lahai-roi; look, it is between Kadadesh and Bered.
And Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.
And Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
