¹After these words, the word of Yahweh came to Abram in a vision, saying, Do not be afraid, Abram; I am a shield for you; your wages are multiplied exceedingly.

²Abram said, O Adonai Yahweh, what will you give me, when I go on childless, and the heir of my house is Damascus Eliezer?

³Abram said, Look, you have not given me seed, and look, the son of my house is my heir.

⁴And look, the word of Yahweh was to him, saying, This one will not be your heir; but one who comes out of your belly, he will be your heir.

⁵He brought him outside and said, Look up, please, to the skies and count the stars, if you are able to count them. And he said to him, So will your seed be.

⁶He believed in Yahweh, and he reckoned it to him as righteousness.

⁷He said to him, I am Yahweh, who brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to take possession of it.

⁸He said, O Adonai Yahweh, by what will I know that I will take possession of it?

⁹He said to him, Bring me a heifer of three years, a she-goat of three years, a ram of three years, a ring-dove, and a nestling.

¹⁰He took all these for himself and cut them through the middle, and set each piece opposite its companion; but the little bird he did not cut in two.

¹¹Birds of prey came down on the carcasses, and Abram blew them away.

¹²And at sunset, a deep sleep fell on Abram; and behold, a dread, a great darkness, was falling on him.

¹³He said to Abram, Know for certain that your seed will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs; and they will serve them, and they will afflict them for four hundred years.

¹⁴But I also am about to judge the nation that they will serve; and after that they will come out with great property.

¹⁵You will come to your fathers in wholeness; you will be buried in a good old age.

¹⁶In the fourth generation they will return here, for the guilt of the Amorite is not yet complete until now.

¹⁷When the sun had gone in and it was thick darkness, look: a fire-pot of smoke and a torch of fire that passed between these pieces.

¹⁸On that day Yahweh cut a covenant with Abram, saying: To your seed I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates.

¹⁹the Kenite and the Kenizzite and the Kadmonite,

²⁰and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Rephaim,

²¹and the Amorite and the Canaanite and the Girgashite and the Jebusite.
