Exodus33

Yahweh spoke to Moses: Go, go up from here, you and the people whom you brought up from the land of Egypt, to the land that I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying: To your seed I will give it.

I will send a messenger before you, and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite.

To a land flowing with milk and honey; for I will not go up in your midst, because you are a hard-necked people, lest I put an end to you on the way.

The people heard this evil word, and mourned; and no one put his ornament on himself.

Yahweh had said to Moses: Say to the children of Israel: You are a hard-necked people. For a single moment I might go up in your midst and put an end to you. So now take your ornament down off yourself, so that I may know what I should do to you.

The children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornament, from the mountain of Horeb.

Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it for himself outside the camp, far away from the camp, and he called it the tent of appointed meeting. And it would be that everyone who sought Yahweh would go out to the tent of appointed meeting, which was outside the camp.

And whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people would rise, and each one would stand at the door of his tent and look after Moses until he entered the tent.

And whenever Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would come down, stand at the door of the tent, and speak with Moses.

All the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the door of the tent; and all the people would rise and bow down, each at the door of his tent.

Yahweh spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his neighbor. Then he returned to the camp, but his attendant, Joshua son of Nun, a young man, did not depart from the middle of the tent.

Moses said to Yahweh: Look, you are saying to me, Bring up this people; but you have not made known to me whom you will send with me. And you said, I know you by name, and also you have found favor in my eyes.

And now, if I have found favor in your eyes, make known to me, please, your ways, and let me know you, so that I may find favor in your eyes. And see that this nation is your people.

He said: My face will go, and I will give you rest.

He said to him: If your face is not going, do not bring us up from here.

And by what will it be known, then, that I have found favor in your eyes, I and your people? Is it not by your going with us? Then we will be set apart, I and your people, from every people that is on the face of the ground.

Yahweh said to Moses: This word too, which you have spoken, I will do; for you have found favor in my eyes, and I have known you by name.

He said: Show me, please, your weightiness.

He said: I will make all my goodness pass before your face, and I will call out the name of Yahweh before you; and I will show favor to whom I show favor, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.

He said: You will not be able to see my face; for no human will see me and live.

Yahweh said: Look, there is a place beside me, and you will take your stand on the rock.

And when my weightiness passes by, I will put you in the cleft of the rock and I will screen you with my palm until I have passed by.

Then I will take away my palm, and you will see my back; but my face will not be seen.
