A man went from the house of Levi and took a daughter of Levi.
The woman conceived and bore a son; and she saw that he was good, and she hid him three months.
And when she was no longer able to hide him, she took for him an ark of papyrus and smeared it with tar and with pitch, and she put the child in it, and put it among the reeds at the edge of the River.
And his sister stood from afar, to know what would be done to him.
And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the River, while her girls walked along the side of the River; and she saw the ark in the middle of the reeds, and she sent her maidservant and took it.
She opened it and saw the child; and look, a boy was crying; and she took pity on him, and said, This is one of the children of the Eberites.
Then his sister said to the daughter of Pharaoh, Shall I go and call for you a woman who suckles, from the Eberite women, so she may suckle the child for you?
And the daughter of Pharaoh said to her, Go. So the young woman went and called the mother of the child.
And the daughter of Pharaoh said to her, Take this child and suckle him for me, and I will give you your wages. So the woman took the child and suckled him.
And the child became great, and she brought him to the daughter of Pharaoh, and he became her son; and she called his name Moses, and she said, Because I drew him out of the waters.
And it happened in those days that Moses became great, and went out to his brothers and saw their burdens; and he saw an Egyptian man striking an Eberite man, one of his brothers.
And he turned this way and that way, and saw that there was no man; and he struck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.
And he went out on the second day, and look, two Eberite men were quarreling; and he said to the wicked one, Why do you strike your companion?
And he said, Who appointed you a man, a chief and judge over us? Are you saying you will kill me, as you killed the Egyptian? And Moses was afraid and said, Surely the word is known.
And Pharaoh heard this word, and sought to kill Moses; and Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelled in the land of Midian, and dwelled by the well.
And the priest of Midian had seven daughters; and they came and drew, and filled the troughs to water their father's flock.
And the shepherds came and drove them away; but Moses rose up and saved them, and watered their flock.
They came to Reuel their father, and he said, "Why have you hurried to come today?"
And they said, An Egyptian man delivered us from the hand of the shepherds, and also drew and drew for us, and watered the flock.
And he said to his daughters, And where is he? Why then have you left the man? Call him, so that he may eat bread.
And Moses was willing to dwell with the man, and he gave Zipporah his daughter to Moses.
And she bore a son, and he called his name Gershom; for he said, I was a sojourner in a foreign land.
And it happened in those many days that the king of Egypt died; and the children of Israel groaned from the labor, and cried out; and their cry for help came up to God from the labor.
And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.
And God saw the children of Israel, and God knew.
