Exodus19

In the third month since the children of Israel went out from the land of Egypt, on this very day they came into the wilderness of Sinai.

They set out from Rephidim and came to the wilderness of Sinai and camped in the wilderness; and Israel camped there in front of the mountain.

And Moses went up to God, and Yahweh called to him from the mountain, saying: Like this you will say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel:

You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on the wings of eagles and brought you to myself.

And now, if you truly listen to my voice and keep my covenant, you will be for me a treasured possession out of all the peoples, for all the land is mine.

And you yourselves will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. These are the words that you will speak to the children of Israel.

And Moses came and summoned the elders of the people, and set before them all these words that Yahweh had commanded him.

And all the people answered together and said: All that Yahweh has spoken, we will do. And Moses brought back the words of the people to Yahweh.

And Yahweh said to Moses: Look, I am about to come to you in the dark cloud-mass, so that the people may hear when I speak with you, and also in you they will trust forever. And Moses told the words of the people to Yahweh.

And Yahweh said to Moses: Go to the people and set them apart today and tomorrow, and let them wash their garments.

And let them be ready for the third day, for on the third day Yahweh will come down before the eyes of all the people on the mountain of Sinai.

And you shall set a boundary for the people all around, saying: Guard yourselves against going up the mountain or touching its end; anyone who touches the mountain shall surely be put to death.

No hand shall touch him, for he will surely be stoned to death or surely be shot; whether animal or man, he shall not live. When the ram's horn is drawn out, they themselves may go up on the mountain.

And Moses went down from the mountain to the people, and set apart the people, and they washed their garments.

And he said to the people: Be ready for three days; do not draw near to a woman.

And on the third day, when morning came, there were sounds and lightning flashes, a heavy cloud over the mountain, and the sound of a horn, very strong; and all the people in the camp shuddered.

And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they took their stand at the lower part of the mountain.

Now Mount Sinai was smoking, all of it, because Yahweh had come down upon it in fire; its smoke went up like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain shuddered greatly.

And the sound of the horn went on growing very strong; Moses would speak, and God would answer him with a voice.

And Yahweh came down upon Mount Sinai, to the head of the mountain; and Yahweh called Moses to the head of the mountain, and Moses went up.

And Yahweh said to Moses: Go down, solemnly warn the people, lest they break through to Yahweh to see, and many of them fall.

And also the priests who come near to Yahweh must set themselves apart, lest Yahweh burst out against them.

And Moses said to Yahweh: The people cannot go up to Mount Sinai, for you yourself warned us, saying: Set a boundary around the mountain, and set it apart.

And Yahweh said to him: Go, come down, then you shall go up, you and Aaron with you; but the priests and the people must not break through to go up to Yahweh, lest he burst out against them.

And Moses went down to the people and said to them.
