They set out from Elim, and all the congregation of the children of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which lies between Elim and between Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month since their going out from the land of Egypt.
All the congregation of the children of Israel grumbled against Moses and against Aaron in the wilderness.
And the children of Israel said to them: If only we had died by the hand of Yahweh in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pot of flesh, when we ate food until full! For you have brought us out into this wilderness to put this whole assembly to death by famine.
And Yahweh said to Moses: Look, I am raining food down for you from the skies, and the people will go out and gather the day's word on its day, so that I may test them whether they will walk in my instruction or not.
And it will be, on the sixth day, that they will prepare what they bring in, and it will be double what they gather day by day.
And Moses and Aaron said to all the children of Israel: At evening you will know that Yahweh brought you out from the land of Egypt;
and in the morning you will see the weightiness of Yahweh, because he has heard your grumblings against Yahweh; and we, what are we, that you grumble against us?
And Moses said: Yahweh's giving you flesh to eat in the evening, and food in the morning to be satisfied, is because of Yahweh's hearing the grumblings that you grumble against him. And we, what are we? Your grumblings are not against us, but against Yahweh.
And Moses said to Aaron: Say to all the congregation of the children of Israel: Draw near before the face of Yahweh, for he has heard your grumblings.
And it happened, as Aaron spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, that they turned toward the wilderness, and look, the weightiness of Yahweh appeared in the cloud.
And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying:
I have heard the grumblings of the children of Israel; speak to them, saying: Between the two evenings you will eat flesh, and in the morning you will be satisfied with food, and you will know that I am Yahweh your God.
And it happened in the evening that the quail came up and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a blanket of dew all around the camp.
And the blanket of dew went up, and look, over the face of the wilderness lay a thin, flake-like thing, thin as hoar frost on the land.
And the children of Israel saw, and each said to his brother: What is it? For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them: It is the food that Yahweh has given you for eating.
This is the word that Yahweh has commanded: Gather of it, each by the portion of his food, an omer for each head, by the number of your living beings; each one, for those in his tent, you shall take.
The children of Israel did so, and they gathered, the one gathering much and the one gathering little.
They measured by the omer, and the one gathering much did not exceed, and the one gathering little did not lack; each gathered by the portion of his food.
And Moses said to them: Let no one leave over any of it until morning.
But they did not listen to Moses, and some men left part of it until morning, and it became rotten with worms, and it stank; and Moses was angry with them.
And they gathered it morning by morning, each by the portion of his food; and when the sun grew warm, it melted.
And it happened on the sixth day that they gathered double food, two omers for each one; and all the chiefs of the congregation came and told Moses.
And he said to them: This is what Yahweh spoke: Tomorrow is a sabbath observance, a holy sabbath to Yahweh. Bake what you will bake, and boil what you will boil, and everything that exceeds, lay down for yourselves to be kept until the morning.
And they laid down it until the morning, as Moses had commanded, and it did not stink, and no maggot was in it.
And Moses said: Eat it today, for today is a sabbath to Yahweh; today you will not find it in the field.
Six days you will gather it, but on the seventh day is a sabbath; it will not be in it.
And it happened on the seventh day that some of the people went out to gather, and they did not find it.
And Yahweh said to Moses: How long do you refuse to keep my commandments and my instructions?
See that Yahweh has given you the sabbath; that is why he is giving you on the sixth day food for two days. Dwell, each one, in his own place; let no one go out from his place on the seventh day.
And the people ceased on the seventh day.
The household of Israel called its name Manna; it was like coriander seed, white, and its taste like a wafer with honey.
And Moses said: This is the word which Yahweh commanded, The fullness of the sheaf from it to the duty to your generations, that they see the food which I ate you in the wilderness in my bringing you forth from the land of Egypt.
And Moses said to Aaron: Take one jar and set there the fullness of the sheaf of manna, and settle it to the face of Yahweh to the duty to your generations.
As Yahweh commanded to Moses, Aaron settled it to the face of the testimony to the duty.
And the children of Israel ate the manna forty years, till their bringing to the land they dwelled; the manna they ate till their bringing to the end of the land of Canaan.
And the omer is a tenth of the ephah.
