Deuteronomy5

Moses called to all Israel and said to them: Hear, Israel, the statutes and the justices that I am speaking in your ears today; learn them and take care to do them.

Yahweh our God cut a covenant with us at Horeb.

Not with our fathers did Yahweh cut this covenant, but with us, we who are here today, all of us alive.

Face to face Yahweh spoke with you on the mountain from the middle of the fire.

I was standing between Yahweh and you at that time, to declare to you the word of Yahweh, for you were afraid in the face of the fire and did not go up on the mountain, saying:

I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slaves.

You will have no other gods before my face.

You will not make for yourself an idol of any form that is in the skies above, or that is in the land beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the land.

You will not bow down to them and you will not serve them, for I, Yahweh your God, am a jealous God, visiting the guilt of the fathers on children, and on the third generation and on the fourth generation, to those who hate me,

and doing loyal love to thousands, to those who love me and to those who keep my commandments.

You will not lift up the name of Yahweh your God for emptiness, for Yahweh will not hold innocent the one who lifts up his name for emptiness.

Keep the day of the sabbath to set it apart, as Yahweh your God commanded you.

Six days you will labor and do all your work.

But the seventh day is a sabbath to Yahweh your God; you will not do any work, you, your son, your daughter, your slave, your maid-servant, your ox, your donkey, all your livestock, and your sojourner who is in your gates, so that your slave and your maid-servant may rest like you.

You will remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and Yahweh your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm; therefore Yahweh your God has commanded you to observe the day of the sabbath.

Honor your father and your mother, as Yahweh your God has commanded you, so that your days may grow long and so that it may go well for you on the ground that Yahweh your God is giving you.

You will not murder.

And you will not commit adultery.

And you will not steal.

And you will not answer against your neighbor as a witness of emptiness.

And you will not desire the wife of your neighbor; and you will not long for the house of your neighbor, his field, his slave, his maid-servant, his ox, his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's.

Yahweh spoke these words to all your company on the mountain, from the middle of the fire, the cloud and the thick dark cloud, with a great sound, and added no more; he wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me.

It happened, when you heard the sound from the middle of the darkness while the mountain was burning with fire, that you came near to me, all the heads of your tribes and your elders.

You said: Look, Yahweh our God has let us see his weightiness and his greatness, and his sound we heard from the middle of the fire; this day we have seen that God speaks with man and he lives.

And now, why will we die? For this great fire will eat us; if we keep on hearing the sound of Yahweh our God any longer, we will die.

For who of all flesh has heard the sound of the living God speaking from the middle of the fire as we did, and lived?

Draw near, you, and hear everything that Yahweh our God will say, and you will speak to us everything that Yahweh our God speaks to you, and we will listen and do it.

Yahweh heard the sound of your words when you spoke to me, and Yahweh said to me, I have heard the sound of the words of this people, which they spoke to you; they have done well in all that they have spoken.

If only this heart of theirs would stay with them, to fear me and to keep all my commandments all the days, so that it may go well for them and for their sons forever!

Go, say to them: Return for yourselves to your tents.

And you, stand here with me, and let me speak to you all the commandment, the statutes and the justices that you are to teach them, so that they do them in the land that I am giving them to take possession of.

You must keep to doing just as Yahweh your God commanded you; you must not turn aside to the right or to the left.

In all the way that Yahweh your God commanded you, you are to walk, so that you may live, and it may be good for you, and you may prolong days in the land that you will take possession of.
