Deuteronomy29

These are the words of the covenant that Yahweh commanded Moses to cut with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, besides the covenant that he cut with them at Horeb.

Moses called to all Israel and said to them: You saw all that Yahweh did before your eyes in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land,

the great trials that your eyes saw, the signs and those great wonders.

Yet Yahweh has not given you a heart to know, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, to this day.

I led you forty years in the wilderness; your cloaks did not wear out from off you, and your sandal did not wear out from off your foot.

You did not eat bread, and you did not drink wine or strong drink, so that you might know that I am Yahweh your God.

You came to this place, and Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan came out to meet us in battle, and we struck them.

We took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenite, to the Gadite, and to the half of the tribe of the Manassite.

Keep the words of this covenant and do them, so that you may act wisely in all that you do.

You are standing today, all of you, before the face of Yahweh your God: your heads, your tribes, your elders, and your officers, every man of Israel,

your children, your wives, and your sojourner who is in the midst of your camp, from the one who cuts your wood to the one who draws your water,

to pass over into the covenant of Yahweh your God and into his oath, which Yahweh your God is cutting with you today,

so as to raise up you today as his people, and he will be God to you, just as he spoke to you and just as he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

And not with you alone am I cutting this covenant and this oath,

but with the one who is here with us, standing today before the face of Yahweh our God, and with the one who is not here with us today.

For you know how we dwelled in the land of Egypt, and how we passed through the midst of the nations through which you passed.

And you saw their detestable things, their idols of wood and stone, silver and gold, which were with them.

Lest there be among you a man or a woman, or a family or a tribe, whose heart is turning away today from Yahweh our God, to go and serve the gods of those nations; lest there be among you a root bearing poison and wormwood.

And it will happen, when he hears the words of this oath, that he will bless himself in his heart, saying, "Wholeness will be mine, though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart, so as to sweep away the watered along with the thirsty."

Yahweh will not be willing to forgive him; for then the nostril of Yahweh and his jealousy will smoke against that man, and every oath written in this scroll will crouch on him, and Yahweh will wipe out his name from under the skies.

And Yahweh will separate him for evil from all the tribes of Israel, according to all the oaths of the covenant written in the scroll of this instruction.

And the later generation will say—your sons who rise up after you, and the foreigner who comes from a land far away—when they see the wounds of that land and its diseases, with which Yahweh has made it sick:

sulfur and salt, a burning—all its land—it is not sown, nor does it make anything sprout, nor does any grass come up in it, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which Yahweh overthrew in his anger and in his rage.

And all the nations will say, "For what reason has Yahweh done thus to this land? What is the burning of this great anger?"

And they will say: Because they forsook the covenant of Yahweh, the God of their fathers, which he cut with them when he brought them out from the land of Egypt,

and they went and served other gods and bowed down to them, gods that they had not known and that he had not assigned to them.

And the nostril of Yahweh burned against that land, to bring upon it all the curses that are written in this record.

And Yahweh uprooted them from off their ground in anger, in rage, and in great wrath, and threw them out into another land, as it is this day.

The hidden things belong to Yahweh our God, and the uncovered things belong to us and to our sons forever, to do all the words of this instruction.
