This is what the Adonai Yahweh showed me, and behold, a basket of summer fruit.
And he said, “What do you see, Amos?” And I said, “A basket of summer fruit.” Then Yahweh said to me, “The end has come to my people Israel; I will never again pass by it.”
The songs of the temple will wail on that day — the utterance of the Adonai Yahweh. The corpses are many; in every place they are thrown out. Hush!
Hear this, you who trample on the needy and put an end to the poor of the land,
saying, “When will the new moon pass, so that we may sell grain, and the sabbath, so that we may open up the grain — making the ephah small and the shekel large, and falsifying the scales with deceit,
so as to buy the lowly for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals — and we will sell the chaff of the grain.”
Yahweh has sworn by the majesty of Jacob: “I will never, for all time, forget any of their deeds.”
Over this, will the land not tremble, and everyone who lives in it mourn? All of it rises like the Nile, is driven out, and sinks like the Nile of Egypt.
And it will happen on that day, the utterance of the Adonai Yahweh, that I will make the sun go down at noon and darken the land in broad daylight.
I will turn your festivals into mourning and all your songs into a dirge; I will bring up sackcloth on every pair of loins and baldness on every head; and I will make it like the mourning for an only child, and its end like a bitter day.
Look, days are coming, the utterance of the Adonai Yahweh, when I will send a hunger into the land—not a hunger for bread, nor a thirst for water, but only for hearing the words of Yahweh.
They will stagger from sea to sea, and from the north to the sunrise they will roam about, seeking the word of Yahweh, but they will not find it.
On that day the beautiful virgins and the young men will swoon from thirst.
Those who swear by the guilt of Samaria, and say, 'As your God lives, O Dan,' and, 'As the way of Beersheba lives,' will fall and never rise again.
