This is what the Adonai Yahweh showed me: look, he was forming locusts at the beginning of the sprouting up of the latter growth — and look, it was the latter growth after the king's mowings.
And it came about that when it had finished eating the vegetation of the land, I said, “Adonai Yahweh, please forgive! How can Jacob stand, since he is small?”
Yahweh relented over this: “It will not be,” Yahweh said.
This is what the Adonai Yahweh showed me: look, the Adonai Yahweh was calling for a contest by fire; it devoured the great deep, and devoured the portion.
Then I said, “Adonai Yahweh, please stop! How can Jacob stand, since he is small?”
Yahweh relented over this: “This too will not be,” said the Adonai Yahweh.
This is what he showed me: look, the Lord was standing beside a wall built by the plumb-line, with a plumb-line in his hand.
And Yahweh said to me, “What do you see, Amos?” And I said, “A plumb-line.” And the Lord said, “Look, I am about to set a plumb-line in the midst of my people Israel; I will never again pass by it.”
The high places of Isaac will be made desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel will lie waste, and I will rise up against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.
And Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent word to Jeroboam, king of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel; the land cannot hold all his words.”
For this is what Amos has said: “Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will surely go into exile away from its own ground.”
And Amaziah said to Amos, “Seer, go, flee off to the land of Judah, and eat bread there, and prophesy there.”
But at Bethel you must never again prophesy, for it is the king's sanctuary, and it is a house of the kingdom.
And Amos answered and said to Amaziah, “I am not a prophet, nor am I a prophet's son; for I was a herdsman, and a picker of sycamore figs.”
And Yahweh took me from behind the flock, and Yahweh said to me, “Go, prophesy to my people Israel.”
And now hear the word of Yahweh. You are saying, “Do not prophesy against Israel, and do not drip prophecy against the house of Isaac.”
Therefore this is what Yahweh says: “Your wife will become a prostitute in the city, and your sons and your daughters will fall by the sword, and your ground will be divided up with a measuring line; and you will die on unclean ground, and Israel will surely go into exile away from its own ground.”
