¹Hear this word that Yahweh spoke against you, people of Israel, against the whole clan that I brought up from the land of Egypt, saying:

²Only you have I known out of all the clans of the ground; therefore I will punish you for all your guilt.

³Do two walk together unless they have met by appointment?

⁴Does a lion roar in the forest when it has no prey? Does a young lion give out its voice from its den unless it has caught something?

⁵Does a bird fall on a bird-trap in the land when there is no snare for it? Does the trap rise from the ground and catch nothing at all?

⁶If a horn is blown in a city, do the people not tremble? If misery comes to a city, has Yahweh not done it?

⁷For the Adonai Yahweh does not carry out any word unless he has uncovered his private counsel to his servants the prophets.

⁸A lion has roared; who will not be afraid? The Adonai Yahweh has spoken; who will not prophesy?

⁹Make it heard over the citadels in Ashdod and over the citadels in the land of Egypt, and say: Gather yourselves on the mountains of Samaria, and see the many tumults in her midst, and the oppressions within her.

¹⁰And they do not know how to do what is straight — the utterance of Yahweh — those who store up violence and ruin in their citadels.

¹¹Therefore thus says the Adonai Yahweh: An enemy, all around the land! He will bring down your strength from you, and your citadels will be plundered.

¹²Like this said Yahweh: As the shepherd will deliver from the mouth of the lion two legs, or the scrap of an ear, so will the children of Israel be delivered, those who dwell in Samaria in the corner of a bed, and on the silk of a bed.

¹³Hear, and bear witness against the house of Jacob — the utterance of the Adonai Yahweh, God of the armies.

¹⁴For on the day that I punish Israel for its transgressions, I will punish the altars of Beth-el; and the horns of the altar will be cut off and will fall to the land.

¹⁵I will strike the winter house along with the summer house; the houses of ivory will perish, and many houses will be swept away — the utterance of Yahweh.
