Now a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a property,
and he kept back some from the proceeds, his wife also being aware, and when he had brought a certain portion, he laid it at the feet of the sent ones.
But Peter said, Ananias, why has the adversary filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself from the proceeds of the land?
While it remained, was it not remaining to you? And having been sold, was it not in your own authority? Why did you purpose this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God!
Now hearing these words, Ananias fell down and breathed his last. And great fear came upon all those hearing these things,
then the younger men arose, covered him, and carried him out, and they buried him.
Now it came to pass about three hours afterward, his wife also, not knowing what had come to pass, came in.
Then Peter replied to her, Tell me, did you sell the land for so much? And she said, Yes, for so much.
But Peter said to her, Why was it agreed together by you to test the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.
Then immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last; then the young men, having come in, found her dead, and carried her out, and they buried her by her husband.
And great fear came upon all the assembly and upon all those hearing these things.
Now by the hands of the sent ones many signs and wonders were happening among the people; and they were all with one accord in the Colonnade of Solomon.
Now of the rest, no one was daring to join with them, but the people were magnifying them.
Now more trusting in the Lord were added, multitudes both of men and women,
so that even into the streets they brought out the sick and put them on cots and mats, that when Peter is coming, at least his shadow shall envelop some of them.
Now the multitude from the surrounding cities was also coming together into Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those being tormented by unclean spirits, who were all healed.
But the high priest, having risen up, and all those with him, which is the sect of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy,
and they laid their hands on the sent ones and put them in the public jail.
But a messenger of the Lord, during the night, having opened the doors of the prison and having brought them out, said,
Go and, having stood, speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life.
Now when they had heard, they entered at the dawn into the temple and were teaching. Now the high priest, having come, and those with him, called together the Council, even all the Senate of the sons of Israel, and sent to the prison house to bring them.
But the officers, having come, did not find them in the prison; then when they had returned, they reported back,
saying, The prison house indeed we found shut with all security, and the guards standing outside before the doors, but when we had opened them, inside we found no one.
Now when the priest and the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were perplexed concerning them, what this would be.
Then a certain one, having come, reported to them, saying, Behold, the men whom you put in the prison are in the temple, standing and teaching the people!
Then the captain with the officers, having gone, was bringing them, not with force, for they were afraid of the people, so that they may not be stoned.
Then when they had brought them, they set them in the Council. And the high priest asked them,
saying, By a charge we commanded you not to teach in this name. And behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring upon us the blood of this man.
But Peter and the sent ones, answering, said, It is necessary to obey God rather than men.
The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you yourselves killed, having hanged Him on a tree;
Him God lifted up as Prince and Savior by His right hand, to give change of heart to Israel and forgiveness of sins.
And we ourselves are His witnesses of these declarations, and also the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those obeying Him.
And when they had heard, they felt cut up and were desiring to kill them.
But a certain man in the Council, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law honored by all the people, having risen up, commanded the men to be put outside for a short while,
then he said to them, Men, Israelites, take heed to yourselves with these men, what you are about to do.
For before these days rose up Theudas, affirming himself to be somebody, to whom were joined a number of men, about four hundred; who was killed, and all as many as were persuaded by him were dispersed, and it came to no thing.
After this man rose up Judas the Galilean in the days of the registration and drew away a significant number of people after him; and he perished, and all as many as were persuaded by him were scattered.
And now I say to you, withdraw from these men and release them, for if this plan or this work shall be from men, it will be overthrown;
but if it is from God, you will not be able to overthrow them, otherwise also you shall be found fighting against God. Now they were persuaded by him,
and having called in the sent ones, when they had beaten them, they commanded them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and released them.
Therefore they indeed were departing from the presence of the Council, rejoicing that they had been counted worthy to suffer dishonor for His Name;
then every day in the temple and in house they were not ceasing teaching and bringing good news that Jesus is the Anointed One.
