Acts17

Then when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews.

Now according to the custom with Paul, he went in to them, and for three Sabbaths he reasoned with them from the Scriptures,

opening and setting forth that it was necessary for the Anointed One to have suffered and to have risen out from the dead, and that this Jesus is the Anointed One whom I myself preach to you.

And some of them were obedient and joined themselves to Paul and to Silas, then a great multitude of the worshipping Greeks along with not a few of the leading women.

Now the disobedient Jews, when they had become jealous and had taken to them certain wicked men of the market-loungers and had collected a crowd, they were setting the city in uproar, and when they had assailed the house of Jason, they were seeking to bring them out to the people;

however, not when they had found them, they were dragging Jason and certain brothers before the city authorities, crying out that These, the ones having upset the world, are come here also,

whom Jason has received; and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, proclaiming another to be king, Jesus.

Then they stirred up the crowd and the city authorities hearing these things;

and when they had taken the security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.

And the brothers immediately through the night sent away both Paul and Silas to Berea, who, having arrived, were going into the synagogue of the Jews.

Now these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, who received the word with all readiness, every day examining the Scriptures if these things would be so.

Therefore many of them indeed trusted, and not a few of the prominent Grecian women and men.

However when the Jews from Thessalonica knew that the word of God was proclaimed by Paul in Berea also, they came there also, stirring up and agitating the crowds.

Then immediately the brothers also sent Paul away to go until to the sea; but both Silas and Timothy remained there.

Now those escorting Paul brought him unto Athens, and when they had received a command unto Silas and Timothy that they may come to him as quickly as possible, they were departing.

Now in Athens, as Paul is waiting for them, his spirit was provoked in him, seeing the city to be utterly idolatrous.

Therefore he was reasoning indeed in the synagogue with the Jews and with those worshiping, and in the marketplace every day with those meeting him;

then some also of the Epicureans and of the Stoics philosophers were encountering him; and some were saying, What would this babbler intend to say? However, others, Of foreign gods he seems to be a proclaimer; because he was bringing good news of Jesus and the resurrection to them.

Having taken hold of him also, they brought him to Ares Hill, saying, Are we able to know what is this new teaching which is spoken by you?

For you are bringing some strange things to our ears; therefore we resolve to know what these things intend to be.

Now all the Athenians and the visiting strangers were spending their time in no thing else than to tell something and to hear something new.

Then when Paul had stood in the midst of the Ares Hill, he was saying, Men Athenians, in all things I behold you as very religious;

for passing through and beholding the objects of your worship, I found even an altar on which had been inscribed: To an unknown God. Therefore whom you worship not knowing, Him I myself proclaim to you.

The God who, having made the world and all things that are in it, He being Lord of the skies and earth, dwells not in hand-made temples,

nor is He served by human hands as needing anything, Himself giving life and breath and the all to all;

then He made of one blood every nation of men to dwell upon all the face of the land, determining ordered times and the boundaries of their habitation,

to seek God, if perhaps indeed they would touch Him and would find Him, and indeed He is not far from each one of us.

For in Him we live and move and are, as also some of the poets among you have said; For we are also his offspring.

Therefore being offspring of God, we ought not to consider the Divine Being to be like to gold or to silver or to stone, a graven thing of the craft and imagination of man.

Therefore the times of ignorance indeed God having overlooked, He now commands all the men everywhere to change your heart;

just as He set a day in which He is about to judge the world in righteousness by a man whom He appointed, having provided a guarantee to all, having raised Him out from the dead.

Now having heard of a resurrection of the dead, some indeed were mocking him, however some said, We will hear you concerning this also again.

And thus Paul went out from their midst.

However some men, having joined themselves to him, trusted, among whom also were Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman named Damaris and others with them.
