It happened, when the king dwelled in his house, and Yahweh had given him rest round about from all his enemies,
that the king said to Nathan the prophet, See, please, I dwell in a house of cedars, while the ark of God dwells in the midst of the curtain.
And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in your heart; for Yahweh is with you.
And it happened in that night, that the word of Yahweh came to Nathan, saying,
Go, and say to my slave, to David, Like this Yahweh has said: Will you build a house for me to dwell in?
For I have not dwelled in a house from the day I brought up the children of Israel from Egypt even until this day; and I have been walking about in a tent and in a dwelling place.
Wherever I have walked about among all the children of Israel, did I speak a word with one of the tribes of Israel whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, Why have you not built me a house of cedars?
And now, Like this you shall say to my slave, to David: Like this Yahweh of hosts has said, I took you from the pasture, from behind the flock, to be ruler over my people, over Israel.
And I have been with you wherever you went, and I cut off all your enemies from before your face; and I have made for you a great name, like the name of the great ones who are in the land.
And I will appoint a place for my people, for Israel, and plant them, and they will dwell in their own place and not tremble any more; and the sons of injustice will not again afflict them, as at the first,
and from the day when I appointed judges over my people Israel; and I have given rest to you from all your enemies; and Yahweh declares to you that Yahweh will make a house for you.
When your days are full and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your seed after you, who will come out from your inward parts, and I will establish his kingdom.
He will build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
I will be a father to him, and he will be a son to me; when he acts perversely, I will reprove him with a rod of men and with the blows of the children of mankind.
And my loyal love will not depart from him, as I removed it from Saul, whom I removed from before your face.
Your house and your kingdom will be made sure forever before you; your throne will be established forever.
According to all these words and according to all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.
King David came in and sat before the face of Yahweh, and said, Who am I, Adonai Yahweh, and who is my house, that you have brought me this far?
And this was small again in your eyes, Adonai Yahweh, and you spoke also about the house of your slave from afar; and is this the instruction of man, Adonai Yahweh?
And what can David add again to speak to you? For you yourself know your slave, Adonai Yahweh.
On account of your word, and according to your own heart, you have done all this greatness, to make it known to your slave.
Therefore you have become great, Adonai Yahweh; for there is none like you, and there is no God besides you, in all that we have heard with our ears.
And who is like your people, like Israel, one nation in the land, which God went to redeem for himself as a people, and to set a name for himself, and to do for you the great thing and awesome deeds for your land, from before the face of your people, whom you redeemed for yourself from Egypt, nations and their gods?
You established for yourself your people Israel as a people for you forever; and you, Yahweh, have become God to them.
And now, O Yahweh God, the word that you have spoken about your slave and about his house, make it stand forever, and do just as you have spoken.
And may your name become great forever, saying, Yahweh of hosts is God over Israel; and may the house of your slave David be established before your face.
For you, Yahweh of hosts, God of Israel, have uncovered the ear of your slave, saying, I will build a house for you; therefore your slave has found his heart to pray to you this prayer.
And now, Adonai Yahweh, you yourself are God, and your words are sure; and you spoke to your slave this good thing.
And now, be willing and bless the house of your slave, that it may be forever before your face; for you, Adonai Yahweh, have spoken; and from your blessing the house of your slave will be blessed forever.
