2 Kings5

1Now Naaman, captain of the army of the king of Aram, was a great man before his lord and held in honor; for through him Yahweh had given deliverance to Aram. The man was a mighty man of valor, but had a skin disease.

2And Aram had gone out in marauding bands and had taken captive from the land of Israel a young girl, and she was in the presence of the wife of Naaman.

3She said to her mistress: If only my lord were before the face of the prophet who is in Samaria! Then he would take him away from his leprosy.

4He went in and told his lord: The girl who is from the land of Israel spoke like this and like that.

5The king of Aram said: Go, go in, and I will send a letter to the king of Israel. He went and took in his hand ten talents of silver, six thousand of gold, and ten changes of garments.

6He brought the letter to the king of Israel, saying: And now, when this letter comes to you, look, I have sent to you Naaman, my slave, that you may gather him from his skin disease.

7It happened, as the king of Israel called the record, he tore his garments, and said: Am I God, to put to death and to live, that he sent to me to gather a man from his leprosy? Only know and see, for he happened to me.

8When Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his garments, he sent to the king: Why have you torn your garments? Let him come, please, to me and he will know that there is a prophet in Israel.

9Naaman came with his horses and his chariot and stood at the entrance of the house of Elisha.

10Elisha sent a messenger to him: Go and wash seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will return to you and be clean.

11Naaman was angry and went off and said: Look, I said to myself, he will surely come out, stand, call on the name of Yahweh his God, wave his hand toward the place, and gather in the one with the skin disease.

12Are not Amana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them and be clean? He turned and went off in burning anger.

13His slaves came near and spoke to him: My father, if the prophet had spoken a great word to you, would you not do it? How much more when he says to you: Wash and be clean!

14He went down and dipped in the Jordan seven times, according to the word of the man of God, and his flesh returned like the flesh of a small boy, and he was clean.

15He and all his camp returned to the man of God. He came and stood before him and said: Look now, I know that there is no God in all the land except in Israel. And now, please take a blessing from your slave.

16He said: As Yahweh lives, before whom I stand, I will not take it. He urged him to take it, but he refused.

17Naaman said: If not, let there be given, please, to your slave a pair of mules' load of ground; for your slave will no longer offer a burnt offering or sacrifice to other gods, but to Yahweh.

18In this word may Yahweh forgive your slave: when my lord goes into the house of Rimmon to bow down there, and he leans on my hand, and I bow down in the house of Rimmon—when I bow down in the house of Rimmon, may Yahweh forgive your slave in this word.

19He said to him: Go in wholeness. He went from him a stretch of land.

20Gehazi, the boy of Elisha, the man of God, said: Look, my lord has held back Naaman this Aramean from taking from his hand what he brought. As Yahweh lives, surely I will run after him and take something from him.

21Gehazi ran after Naaman. Naaman saw one running after him, and dropped down from the chariot to meet him, and said: Is there wholeness?

22He said: Wholeness. My lord has sent me, saying: Look, just now two boys have come to me from the hill country of Ephraim, from the children of the prophets. Please give them a talent of silver and two changes of garments.

23Naaman said: Be pleased to accept two talents. He pressed him, and bound up two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of garments, and gave them to two of his boys, and they carried them before him.

24He came to the Hill, took them from their hand, deposited them in the house, and sent away the men; and they went.

25He went in and stood before his lord. Elisha said to him: Where from, Gehazi? He said: Your servant has not gone anywhere.

26He said to him: Did my heart not go along when a man turned from his chariot to meet you? Is it a time to take the silver, and to take garments, olives, vineyards, flocks, cattle, slaves, and female slaves?

27And the skin disease of Naaman will cling to you and to your seed forever. He went out from before him with a skin disease, white as snow.
