And one woman from the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha: Your slave, my husband, is dead, and you know that your slave was fearing Yahweh; and the creditor has come to take my two children for himself as slaves.
Elisha said to her: What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house? She said: There is nothing for your female slave at all in the house except a flask of oil.
He said: Go, borrow vessels for yourself from outside, from all your neighbors — empty vessels; do not make them few.
And you shall come in, and shut the door behind you and behind your sons, and pour out into all these vessels; and the full one you shall remove.
She went from him and shut the door behind her and behind her sons; they were bringing them to her, and she kept pouring out.
And it happened, as the vessels were full, she said to her son: Bring me another vessel. He said to her: There is no other vessel. And the oil stood still.
She came and told the man of God. He said: Go, sell the oil and pay your debt, and you and your sons will live on the remainder.
And it happened, one day, that Elisha passed on to Shunem, and there was a great woman, and she took hold of him to eat food; and it happened, as often as he passed by, he would turn aside there to eat food.
She said to her husband: Look, now, I know that the man of God is holy, he who passes by us continually.
Please, let us make a small upper room on the wall, and let us put for him there a bed, a table, a seat, and a lampstand; and it shall be that when he comes to us, he can turn aside there.
And it happened, one day, that he came there, and turned aside to the upper room, and lay down there.
He said to Gehazi, his servant: Summon this Shunammite woman. He summoned her, and she stood before him.
He said to him: Please say to her: Look, you have been anxiously careful for us with all this care; what is there to do for you? Is there anything to speak for you to the king or to the commander of the army? She said: In the midst of my own people I am dwelling.
He said: And what is to be done for her? Gehazi said: Indeed, she has no son, and her husband is old.
He said: Summon her. He summoned her, and she stood in the doorway.
He said: At this appointed time, about the time of reviving, you will be embracing a son. She said: No, my lord, man of God; do not lie to your female slave.
The woman conceived, and bore a son at that appointed time, about the time of reviving, as Elisha had spoken to her.
The child became great; and it happened one day that he went out to his father, to the harvesters.
He said to his father: My head, my head! He said to the lad: Carry him to his mother.
He carried him and brought him to his mother; and he sat on her knees until noon, and he died.
She went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and closed up behind him, and went out.
She called to her husband, and said: Send, please, me one of the lads and one of the female donkeys, so that I may run to the man of God and return.
He said: Why are you going to him today? It is not new moon and not sabbath. She said: Wholeness.
She saddled the female donkey and said to her servant: Drive on and go; do not hold back for me to ride, unless I say so to you.
She went and came to the man of God at Mount Carmel. And it happened, when the man of God saw her from opposite, he said to Gehazi, his servant: Look, there is the Shunammite woman, that one.
Now run, please, to meet her, and say to her: Is there wholeness for you? Is there wholeness for your husband? Is there wholeness for the child? She said: Wholeness.
She came to the man of God at the mountain and grasped his feet. Gehazi came near to push her away, but the man of God said: Let go of her, for her being is bitter for her, and Yahweh has hidden it from me and has not told me.
She said: Did I ask for a son from my lord? Did I not say: Do not mislead me?
He said to Gehazi: Gird up your loins, take my staff in your hand, and go; if you meet anyone, do not bless him, and if anyone blesses you, do not answer him; and lay my staff on the face of the lad.
The mother of the lad said: By the life of Yahweh, and by the life of your being, I will not leave you. He rose and went after her.
Gehazi passed on ahead of them, and he laid the staff on the face of the boy; but there was no sound and no attention. He turned back to meet him and told him: The boy has not woken.
Elisha came into the house, and there was the boy, dead, laid on his bed.
He went in, closed the door behind the two of them, and prayed to Yahweh.
He went up and lay down over the child; he put his mouth on his mouth, and his eyes on his eyes, and his palms on his palms, and he crouched over him; and grew warm the flesh of the child.
He turned back and walked in the house, once this way and once that way; then he went up and crouched over him. The boy sneezed up to seven times, and the boy opened his eyes.
He called to Gehazi and said: Call to this Shunammite woman. He called her, and she came to him. He said: Lift up your son.
She came in and fell at his feet and bowed down to the land; then she lifted up her son and went out.
Elisha went back to Gilgal while the famine was in the land. The sons of the prophets were sitting before him. He said to his boy: Put on the large pot and boil a stew for the sons of the prophets.
One man went out to the field to gather herbs. He found a vine of the field and gathered from it gourds of the field, filling his garment. He came and sliced them into the pot of stew, for they did not know.
They poured it out for the men to eat. And as they ate from the stew, they cried out and said: Death is in the pot, O man of God! And they could not eat.
He said: Fetch flour. He threw it into the pot and said: Pour it out for the people, so they may eat. And there was no evil word in the pot.
A man came from Baal Shalishah and brought the man of God bread of the firstfruits, twenty loaves of barley, and fresh garden produce in his sack. He said: Give it to the people, so they may eat.
His servant said: What, shall I set this before a hundred men? But he said: Give it to the people, so they may eat, for thus says Yahweh: They will eat, and have some left over.
He set it before them, and they ate and had some left over, according to the word of Yahweh.
