And it happened, when Yahweh took Elijah up in the whirlwind to the skies, that Elijah and Elisha went from Gilgal.
And Elijah said to Elisha, Dwell here, please, for Yahweh has sent me to Beth-el. And Elisha said, As Yahweh lives and as your being lives, I will not leave you. So they went down to Beth-el.
And the children of the prophets who were at Beth-el came out to Elisha and said to him, Do you know that today Yahweh is about to take your lord from over your head? And he said, I also know; hush.
And Elijah said to him, Elisha, dwell here, please, for Yahweh has sent me to Jericho. And he said, As Yahweh lives and as your being lives, I will not leave you. So they went to Jericho.
And the children of the prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha and said to him, Do you know that today Yahweh is about to take your lord from over your head? And he said, I also know; hush.
And Elijah said to him, Dwell here, please, for Yahweh has sent me to the Jordan. And he said, As Yahweh lives and as your being lives, I will not leave you. So the two of them went.
And fifty men of the children of the prophets went and stood opposite, from afar; and the two of them stood at the Jordan.
And Elijah took his mantle and rolled it up, and struck the waters, and they divided this way and that way; and the two of them passed over on the dry ground.
And it happened, as they passed over, that Elijah said to Elisha, "Ask what I should do for you before I am taken from you." And Elisha said, "Please, let a double portion of your breath be upon me."
And he said, You have asked a hard thing. If you see me being taken from you, let it be so for you; and if not, it will not be.
And it happened, as they walked on and on, talking, that look, a chariot of fire and horses of fire parted between the two of them; and Elijah went up in the whirlwind to the skies.
And Elisha was watching, and he was crying out, My father, my father, the chariotry of Israel and its horsemen! And he did not see him any more. And he took hold of his garments and tore them into two pieces.
And he lifted up the mantle of Elijah which had fallen from off him, and went back and stood on the edge of the Jordan.
And he took the mantle of Elijah which had fallen from off him, and struck the waters, and said, Where is Yahweh, the God of Elijah, even he? And he struck the waters, and they divided this way and that way; and Elisha passed over.
And the children of the prophets who were at Jericho saw him from opposite, and said, The breath of Elijah has settled on Elisha. And they came to meet him, and bowed down to him, to the land.
And they said to him, Behold, there are with your servants fifty men, children of strength; let them go and search for your lord, lest the breath of Yahweh has carried him off and thrown him on one of the mountains or in one of the valleys. And he said, You must not send.
But they pressed on him until he was ashamed, and he said, Send. So they sent fifty men, and they searched three days and did not find him.
And they returned to him while he was dwelling in Jericho, and he said to them: Did I not say to you, Do not go?
And the men of the city said to Elisha, Behold, the site of the city is good, as my lord sees, but the waters are bad and the land miscarries.
And he said, Fetch me a new bowl and put salt there. And they took it to him.
And he went forth to the source of the waters and threw salt there, and said, Like this Yahweh says: I have healed these waters; there will not be death or miscarriage from there again.
And the waters were healed to this day, according to the word of Elisha which he spoke.
And he went up from there to Beth-el; and as he came up on the way, young boys went forth from the city and mocked him and said to him, Come up, bald! Come up, bald!
And he turned behind him and saw them and cursed them in the name of Yahweh. And two she-bears went forth from the forest and tore to pieces forty and two of the children.
And he went from there to the mountain of Carmel, and from there he returned to Samaria.
