In the twenty-third year of Joash son of Ahaziah king of Judah, Jehoahaz son of Jehu reigned over Israel in Samaria seventeen years.
He did what was evil in the eyes of Yahweh and walked after the sin of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which caused Israel to sin; he did not turn aside from it.
And the anger of Yahweh burned against Israel, and he gave them into the hand of Hazael king of Aram and into the hand of Ben-hadad son of Hazael, all the days.
Jehoahaz entreated the face of Yahweh, and Yahweh listened to him, for he saw the oppression of Israel, how the king of Aram oppressed them.
And Yahweh gave Israel a deliverer, and they came out from under the hand of Aram; and the children of Israel dwelled in their tents as yesterday and the day before.
Nevertheless they did not turn aside from the sin of the house of Jeroboam, which caused Israel to sin; in it he walked; and also the Asherah pole stood in Samaria.
For he had not left Jehoahaz a people, except fifty horsemen and ten chariots and ten thousand footmen; for the king of Aram had destroyed them and made them like dust for threshing.
And the rest of the words of Jehoahaz, and all that he did, and his might, are they not written in the scroll of the words of the days for the kings of Israel?
Jehoahaz lay down with his fathers, and they buried him in Samaria; and Joash his son became king in his place.
In the thirty-seventh year of Joash king of Judah, Jehoash son of Jehoahaz reigned over Israel in Samaria sixteen years.
He did what was evil in the eyes of Yahweh; he did not turn aside from all the sin of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which caused Israel to sin; in it he walked.
As for the rest of the words of Joash, and all that he did, and his might, how he fought against Amaziah king of Judah—are they not written in the scroll of the words of the days of the kings of Israel?
Joash lay down with his fathers; and Jeroboam sat on his throne; and Joash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel.
Now Elisha had become sick with his sickness by which he would die; and Joash king of Israel went down to him and wept over his face, and said, "My father, my father, the chariotry of Israel and its horsemen!"
Elisha said to him, "Take a bow and arrows." So he took for himself a bow and arrows.
And he said to the king of Israel, "Mount your hand on the bow," and he mounted his hand; and Elisha laid his hands on the hands of the king.
And he said, "Open the window eastward," and he opened it; and Elisha said, "Shoot," and he shot; and he said, "An arrow of victory for Yahweh, and an arrow of victory over Aram; and you will strike down Aram at Aphek until you have made an end."
And he said, "Take the arrows," and he took them; and he said to the king of Israel, "Strike the land," and he struck three times and he stood.
And the man of God was angry with him and said, "You should have struck five or six times; then you would have struck down Aram until it was finished; but now you will strike Aram three times."
And Elisha died, and they buried him; and raiding bands of Moab came into the land as the year came in.
And it happened, as they were burying a man, behold, they saw the raiding band, and they threw the man into the grave of Elisha; and the man went and touched the bones of Elisha, and he lived and rose on his feet.
And Hazael the king of Aram oppressed Israel all the days of Jehoahaz.
And Yahweh showed favor to them and had compassion on them and turned to them for the sake of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; and he was not willing to ruin them, and he did not throw them from his face until now.
And Hazael the king of Aram died, and Ben-hadad his son reigned in his place.
And Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz returned and took the cities from the hand of Ben-hadad the son of Hazael, which he had taken from the hand of Jehoahaz his father in the war. Three times Joash struck him down and restored the cities of Israel.
