2 Kings12

1In the seventh year of Jehu, Jehoash became king, and forty years he reigned in Jerusalem; and the name of his mother was Zibiah, from Beer-sheba.

2And Jehoash did what was right in the eyes of Yahweh all his days that Jehoiada the priest instructed him.

3Only the high places were not removed; the people were still sacrificing and making sacrifices smoke on the high places.

4Jehoash said to the priests, "All the silver of the holy things that is brought to the house of Yahweh—the silver passing over from each man, the silver of beings at his estimate, all the silver that comes up on any person's heart to bring to the house of Yahweh—

5Let the priests take it for themselves, each from his acquaintance, and let them repair the breach of the house wherever a breach may be found."

6And it came about that in the twenty-third year of King Jehoash, the priests had not repaired the breach of the house.

7So King Jehoash summoned Jehoiada the priest and the priests, and said to them, "Why are you not repairing the breach of the house? Now, do not take silver from your acquaintances, but you shall give it for the breach of the house."

8And the priests agreed not to take silver from the people, and not to repair the breach of the house.

9Then Jehoiada the priest took one chest and bored a hole in its door, and set it beside the altar, on the right as anyone enters the house of Yahweh; and the priests who guarded the threshold put there all the silver that was brought to the house of Yahweh.

10Whenever they saw that the silver in the chest was abundant, the king's scribe and the great priest would come up, and they would shut up and count the silver that was found in the house of Yahweh.

11Then they gave the weighed-out silver into the hands of those who did the work, who were made overseers of the house of Yahweh; and they brought it out to the craftsmen of wood and to the builders who were working on the house of Yahweh,

12and to the wall-builders and the stone-cutters, and for buying timber and hewn stones to repair the breach of the house of Yahweh, and for everything that goes out on the house to repair it.

13Only, no silver basins, snuffers, bowls, or trumpets, nor any vessel of gold or vessel of silver, were made for the house of Yahweh from the silver that was brought into the house of Yahweh.

14For they would give it to those who did the work, and with it they would repair the house of Yahweh.

15And they did not reckon with the men into whose hand they gave the silver, to give it to those who did the work, for they were acting in steadiness.

16The silver for guilt and the silver for sins was not brought into the house of Yahweh; it belonged to the priests.

17Then Hazael king of Aram went up and fought against Gath and captured it; and Hazael set his face to go up against Jerusalem.

18Jehoash king of Judah took all the holy things that his fathers Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, and Ahaziah, kings of Judah, had set apart, and his own holy things, and all the gold that was found in the treasuries of the house of Yahweh and the house of the king, and sent them to Hazael king of Aram; and he went up away from Jerusalem.

19And the rest of the words of Joash, and all that he did, are they not written in the scroll of the words of the days for the kings of Judah?

20His servants rose up and banded together in a conspiracy, and struck down Joash at Beth-millo, which goes down to Silla.

21And Jozabad son of Shimeath and Jehozabad son of Shomer, his servants, struck him down, and he died; and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David; and Amaziah his son became king in his place.
