Moab rebelled against Israel after the death of Ahab.
Ahaziah fell through the network in his upper room which was in Samaria, and became ill. He sent messengers and said to them, Go, inquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron whether I will live from this sickness.
And the messenger of Yahweh spoke to Elijah the Tishbite, Rise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and speak to them, Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron?
Therefore Yahweh has said this: The bed where you went up, you will not come down from it, for you will surely die. And Elijah went.
The messengers returned to him, and he said to them, Why have you returned?
They said to him, A man came up to meet us and said to us, Go, return to the king who sent you and say to him, This is what Yahweh says: Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending to inquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron? Therefore, as for the bed where you went up there, you will not come down from it, for you will surely die.
And he spoke to them, What was the manner of the man who came up to meet you and spoke to you these words?
They said to him, A hairy man, with a belt of skin girded up around his loins. And he said, He is Elijah the Tishbite.
Then he sent to him a captain of fifty with his fifty. He came up to him, and behold, he was dwelling over the head of the mountain. And he spoke to him, Man of God, the king has spoken: Come down.
Elijah answered and spoke to the captain of the fifty, If I am a man of God, let fire come down from the skies and eat you and your fifty. And fire came down from the skies and ate him and his fifty.
And he returned and sent to him another captain of fifty with his fifty. And he answered and spoke to him, Man of God, this is what the king says: Quickly, come down.
Elijah answered and spoke to them, If I am a man of God, let fire come down from the skies and eat you and your fifty. And the fire of God came down from the skies and ate him and his fifty.
And he returned and sent a third captain of fifty with his fifty. The third captain of the fifty went up and came, and bowed down on his knees before Elijah, and sought favor from him and spoke to him, Man of God, please let my being be precious, and the being of your servants, these fifty, in your eyes.
Behold, fire has come down from the skies and eaten the two former captains of the fifty and their fifty; and now, let my being be precious in your eyes.
And the messenger of Yahweh spoke to Elijah, Go down with him; do not be afraid of his face. So he rose and went down with him to the king.
And he spoke to him, This is what Yahweh says: Because you sent messengers to inquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron — is it because there is no God in Israel to inquire for his word? — therefore, as for the bed where you went up there, you will not come down from it, for you will surely die.
So he died, according to the word of Yahweh that Elijah had spoken. And Jehoram became king in his place in the second year of Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, for he had no son.
And the rest of the words of Ahaziah, which he did, are they not written in the scroll of the words of the days of the kings of Israel?
