After these things and this stability, Sennacherib the king of Assyria came, and came in Judah, and encamped against the fortified cities, and said to burst them to it.
And Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come, and that his face was set for war against Jerusalem.
And he advised with his officials and his mighty men to seal the water of the eyes which were from the outside to the city; and they helped it.
And a numerous people gathered together, and they stopped up all the springs and the wadi that flowed through the middle of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Assyria come and find many waters?
And he strengthened himself, and built all the wall that was burst open, and brought up over the towers, and to the outside another wall; and he strengthened the Millo of the city of David, and made weapons to the multitude, and shields.
And he set wars officials over the people, and gathered them together to him to the broad place of the gate of the city, and spoke over their heart, saying,
Be strong and prevail, do not fear and do not be terrified from the face of the king of Assyria, and from to the face of all the hordes which are with him; for with us is great from with him.
With it is the arm of the flesh, and with us is Yahweh our God, to help us and to fight our wars. And the people sustained themselves over the word of Hezekiah the king of Judah.
After this, Sennacherib the king of Assyria sent his slaves to Jerusalem (and he over Lachish, and all his dominion with him) over Hezekiah the king of Judah, and over all Judah which were in Jerusalem, saying,
Thus says Sennacherib king of Assyria: On what are you trusting, you who dwell in the siege in Jerusalem?
Is not Hezekiah inciting you, to give you over to die by hunger and by thirst, saying, Yahweh our God will deliver us out of the palm of the king of Assyria?
Is it not he, Hezekiah, who removed his high places and his altars, and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, saying, Before the face of one altar you will bow down, and on it you will make sacrifices smoke?
Do you not know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of the lands? Were the gods of the nations of the lands really able to deliver their land from my hand?
Who among all the gods of these nations that my fathers utterly destroyed was able to deliver his people from my hand, that your God should be able to deliver you from my hand?
And now, do not let Hezekiah deceive you, and do not let him entice you like this, and do not believe him; for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to deliver his people from my hand or from the hand of my fathers. How much less will your God deliver you from my hand!
And his servants spoke yet more against Yahweh God and against his servant Hezekiah.
He wrote letters to taunt Yahweh the God of Israel and to speak against him, saying, Like the gods of the nations of the lands, who did not deliver their people from my hand, so the God of Hezekiah will not deliver his people from my hand.
They called out in a loud voice in Judean to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to make them afraid and to terrify them, so that they might capture the city.
They spoke about the God of Jerusalem as about the gods of the peoples of the land, the work of the hands of humankind.
And Hezekiah the king and Isaiah the son of Amoz the prophet prayed over this, and cried to the heavens.
And Yahweh sent a messenger, who wiped out every mighty man of valor, and the ruler and the officials, in the camp of the king of Assyria; so he returned with shame on his face to his land. And he came to the house of his god, and some of his own offspring felled him there with the sword.
So Yahweh saved Hezekiah and those who dwelt in Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib king of Assyria and from the hand of everyone, and led them gently on every side.
Many were bringing an offering to Yahweh at Jerusalem, and precious things to Hezekiah king of Judah; and he was lifted up in the eyes of all the nations from then on.
In those days Hezekiah was sick to the point of dying; and he prayed to Yahweh, who spoke to him and gave him a sign.
But Hezekiah did not repay according to the benefit done to him, for his heart grew haughty, and there was wrath upon him and upon Judah and Jerusalem.
Then Hezekiah humbled himself for the haughtiness of his heart, he and those who dwelt in Jerusalem; and the wrath of Yahweh did not come upon them in the days of Hezekiah.
And Hezekiah had wealth and weightiness, multiplied exceedingly; and he made himself treasuries for silver and for gold, and for rare stone, and for spices, and for shields, and for all kinds of precious articles;
and storehouses for the yield of grain, new wine, and fresh oil; and stalls for every kind of livestock, and flocks for the mangers.
And he made cities for himself, and acquired livestock of flock and herd in abundance; for God had given him property, exceedingly great.
It was Hezekiah himself who stopped up the upper outlet of the waters of Gihon and led them straight down to the sunset side of the city of David; and Hezekiah prospered in all his work.
And so, regarding the interpreters of the officials of Babylon, who sent to him to inquire about the sign that had happened in the land, God left him to put him to the test, to know everything in his heart.
The rest of the words of Hezekiah and his acts of loyal love, see, they are written in the vision of Isaiah son of Amoz the prophet, on the scroll of the kings of Judah and Israel.
Hezekiah lay down with his fathers, and they buried him at the ascent of the graves of the sons of David; and all Judah and those who dwelt in Jerusalem rendered him weightiness at his death. And Manasseh his son reigned in his place.
