2 Chronicles25

1Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem; and the name of his mother was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem.

2He did what was right in the eyes of Yahweh, only not with a complete heart.

3And it happened, when the kingdom was strong over him, that he killed his slaves who had struck down the king his father.

4But their children he did not put to death, as it is written in the instruction, in the scroll of Moses, which Yahweh commanded, saying, Fathers shall not die for children, and children shall not die for fathers; for each man shall die for his own sin.

5And Amaziah gathered Judah together and stationed them by the house of the fathers, under the officials of the thousands and the officials of the hundreds, for all Judah and Benjamin; and he mustered them from twenty years old and upward, and found them three hundred thousand chosen men, going out to war, holding spear and shield.

6And he hired a hundred thousand mighty men of valor from Israel for a hundred talents of silver.

7But a man of God came to him, saying, O king, do not let the army of Israel go with you, for Yahweh is not with Israel, with all the sons of Ephraim.

8But go yourself, act, be strong for the battle; God will make you stumble before the enemy, for there is strength in God to help and to make stumble.

9And Amaziah said to the man of God, But what is to be done about the hundred talents that I gave to the band of Israel? And the man of God said, Yahweh has it to give you much more than this.

10So Amaziah separated them, the band that had come to him from Ephraim, to go to their place; and their anger burned exceedingly against Judah, and they returned to their place in burning anger.

11And Amaziah strengthened himself, and led his people on, and went to the Valley of Salt, and struck down ten thousand of the sons of Seir.

12And the sons of Judah took captive ten thousand alive, and brought them to the top of the crag, and threw them from the top of the crag, and all of them were split open.

13But the sons of the band that Amaziah had sent back from going with him to the battle made a dash against the cities of Judah, from Samaria to Beth-horon, and struck down three thousand of them, and plundered great spoil.

14And it happened, after Amaziah came from striking down the Edomites, that he brought the gods of the sons of Seir and set them up for himself as gods, and before them he bowed down, and to them he made sacrifices smoke.

15And the anger of Yahweh burned against Amaziah, and he sent to him a prophet, and he said to him, Why have you sought the gods of the people, who did not deliver their own people from your hand?

16And it happened, as he was speaking to him, that he said to him, Have we made you a counselor of the king? Cease for yourself; why should they strike you down? And the prophet ceased, and said, I know that God has resolved to ruin you, because you have done this and have not listened to my counsel.

17And Amaziah king of Judah took counsel, and sent to Joash son of Jehoahaz son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us look at one another's faces.

18And Joash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The bramble that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, Give your daughter to my son as a wife; and a beast of the field that was in Lebanon passed by and trampled the bramble.

19You said, Look, you have struck down Edom, and your heart has lifted you up to be weighty. Now dwell in your house; why would you engage in strife to your harm, so that you will fall, you and Judah with you?

20But Amaziah did not listen, for it was from God, so as to give them into a hand, because they had sought the gods of Edom.

21So Joash king of Israel went up, and they looked at one another's faces, he and Amaziah king of Judah, at Beth-shemesh, which belongs to Judah.

22And Judah was struck down before Israel, and they fled, each man to his tent.

23And Joash king of Israel seized Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash the son of Jehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem, and broke through the wall of Jerusalem from the Gate of Ephraim to the Gate of the Turn, four hundred cubits.

24And all the gold and the silver, and all the articles that were found in the house of God with Obed-edom, and the treasures of the house of the king, and the sons of the hostages, and he returned to Samaria.

25And Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah lived after the death of Joash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel fifteen years.

26And the rest of the words of Amaziah, the first and the last, are they not, look, written in the scroll of the kings of Judah and Israel?

27From the time that Amaziah turned aside from following Yahweh, they bound together a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish; and they sent after him to Lachish and put him to death there.

28And they carried him on horses, and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.
