2 Chronicles23

1And in the seventh year Jehoiada strengthened himself, and took the officials of the hundreds, Azariah the son of Jeroham, and Ishmael the son of Jehohanan, and Azariah the son of Obed, and Maaseiah the son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat the son of Zikri, with him in the covenant.

2They went around in Judah and gathered the Levites from all the cities of Judah, and the heads of the fathers of Israel, and they came to Jerusalem.

3All the company cut a covenant in the house of God with the king. And he said to them, Behold, the son of the king will reign, just as Yahweh spoke concerning the sons of David.

4This is the word that you shall do: the third of you who come in on the sabbath, of the priests and of the Levites, shall be gatekeepers of the thresholds.

5And a third shall be at the house of the king, and a third at the gate of the foundation, and all the people in the courts of the house of Yahweh.

6And let no one come into the house of Yahweh except the priests and those who serve of the Levites; they may come in, for they are set apart; and all the people shall keep the duty of Yahweh.

7The Levites shall surround the king on every side, each man with his weapons in his hand; and whoever comes into the house shall be put to death. And be with the king when he comes in and when he goes out.

8The Levites and all Judah did according to all that Jehoiada the priest had commanded, and they took each his men, those who came in on the sabbath with those who went out on the sabbath; for Jehoiada the priest had not released the divisions.

9And Jehoiada the priest gave to the officials of the hundreds the spears, the bucklers, and the shields that had belonged to King David, which were in the house of God.

10He stationed all the people, each man with his weapon in his hand, from the right side of the house to the left side of the house, at the altar and the house, around the king.

11They brought forth the son of the king, and they set over him the crown and the testimony, and they made him king; and Jehoiada and his sons anointed him, and they said, Let the king live!

12Athaliah heard the sound of the people running and praising the king, and she came to the people at the house of Yahweh.

13She saw, and there was the king standing by his pillar at the entrance, with the officials and the trumpets beside the king; and all the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing on trumpets, and the singers with the instruments of song were showing how to praise. Then Athaliah tore her garments and said, Conspiracy! Conspiracy!

14Jehoiada the priest brought out the officials of the hundreds, those appointed over the army, and said to them, Bring her out from within the ranks; and whoever goes after her is to be put to death with the sword. For the priest had said, You must not put her to death in the house of Yahweh.

15They laid hands on her, and she came to the entrance of the gate of the horses at the house of the king, and there they put her to death.

16Jehoiada cut a covenant between himself, all the people, and the king, that they would become a people belonging to Yahweh.

17All the people came to the house of the Baal and pulled down it; they broke his altars and his images in pieces, and they killed Mattan the priest of the Baal before the altars.

18Jehoiada placed the oversight of the house of Yahweh in the hand of the priests, the Levites, whom David had assigned over the house of Yahweh, to offer up the burnt offerings of Yahweh, as it is written in the instruction of Moses, with gladness and with song, by the hands of David.

19He stationed the gatekeepers at the gates of the house of Yahweh, so that no one unclean in any word could come in.

20He took the officials of the hundreds, the mighty, those ruling over the people, and all the people of the land, and brought down the king from the house of Yahweh; they came through the middle of the upper gate to the house of the king and seated the king on the throne of the kingdom.

21All the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet; and they had put to death Athaliah with the sword.
