Jehoshaphat lay down with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David; and Jehoram his son reigned in his place.
He had brothers, the children of Jehoshaphat: Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azariahu, Michael and Shephatiah; all these were the children of Jehoshaphat king of Israel.
Their father gave them many gifts, silver and gold and precious things, along with cities of strongholds in Judah; but the kingdom he gave to Jehoram, for he was the firstborn.
Jehoram rose over the kingdom of his father and made himself strong, and killed all his brothers with the sword, and some of the leaders of Israel as well.
Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem.
He walked in the way of the kings of Israel, just as the house of Ahab did, for the daughter of Ahab was his wife; and he did what was evil in the eyes of Yahweh.
Yet Yahweh was not willing to ruin the house of David, for the sake of the covenant which he had cut with David, and as he had said, to give him a lamp and to his sons all the days.
In his days Edom rebelled from under the hand of Judah and made a king over themselves.
Jehoram passed over with his officials, and all the chariotry with him. And it happened that he rose by night and struck down Edom, who was surrounding him, and the officials of the chariotry.
Edom rebelled from under the hand of Judah to this day. Then Libnah rebelled at that time from under his hand, for he had forsaken Yahweh, the God of his fathers.
He also made high places in the mountains of Judah, and made the dwellers of Jerusalem prostitute themselves, and thrust Judah aside.
A writing came to him from Elijah the prophet, saying: This is what Yahweh, the God of David your father, says: Because you have not walked in the ways of Jehoshaphat your father, or in the ways of Asa king of Judah,
but you have walked in the way of the kings of Israel, and made Judah and the dwellers of Jerusalem prostitute themselves, as the house of Ahab did; and also you killed your brothers, the house of your father, who were better than you.
Behold, Yahweh is about to strike your people with a great plague, and your sons, and your wives, and all your property.
And you will be in great sicknesses, with a disease of your bowels, until your bowels come out from the sickness, day upon day.
Yahweh roused against Jehoram the breath of the Philistines and the Arabs who were at the side of the Cushites.
They came up into Judah and broke into it, and took captive all the property that was found in the house of the king, and also his sons and his wives; and no son was left to him except Jehoahaz, the youngest of his sons.
And after all this, Yahweh struck him in his bowels with a sickness for which there was no healing.
And it happened, from day to day, about the time of the end's going forth, after two spans of days, his bowels went forth with his sickness, and he died in harmful diseases. And his people made no burning for him, like the burning of his fathers.
He was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem; and he went without being longed for, and they buried him in the city of David, but not in the graves of the kings.
