It happened after this that the children of Moab and the children of Ammon, and with them some of the Ammonites came against Jehoshaphat for battle.
They came and told Jehoshaphat, saying: A great horde is coming against you from the other side of the sea, from Aram; and behold, they are in Hazezon-tamar, that is En-gedi.
Jehoshaphat was afraid, and set his face to seek Yahweh, and proclaimed a fast over all Judah.
Judah gathered together to seek from Yahweh; also from all the cities of Judah, they came to seek Yahweh.
Jehoshaphat stood in the company of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of Yahweh, facing the new court.
He said: Yahweh, the God of our father, are you not he, God in the heavens? And you rule over all the kingdoms of the nations, and in your hand is strength and victory, and there is none to stand with you.
Are you not our God, who dispossessed those who dwelled in this land from the face of your people Israel, and gave it to the seed of Abraham your friend forever?
They dwelled in it and built in it a sanctuary for you, for your name, saying:
If evil comes upon us: sword, judgment, pestilence, and famine, we will stand before this house and before your face, for your name is in this house, and we will cry out to you from our distress, and you will hear and save.
And now, behold the children of Ammon and Moab and the mountain of Seir, whom you did not let Israel enter into, when they came from the land of Egypt, for they turned aside from them and did not destroy them.
And behold, they are repaying us, by coming to drive us out from your possession, which you caused us to possess.
Our God, will you not execute judgment on them? For there is no strength in us before this great horde that is coming against us, and we do not know what to do; but our eyes are on you.
And all Judah stood before the face of Yahweh, also their family, their wives, and their sons.
And Jahaziel the son of Zechariah the son of Benaiah the son of Jeiel the son of Mattaniah, the Levite of the children of Asaph: the breath of Yahweh was upon him in the middle of the company.
He said: Pay attention, all Judah, and dwellers of Jerusalem, and King Jehoshaphat. Thus says Yahweh to you: You, do not be afraid, and do not be dismayed before the face of this great horde, for the battle is not yours, but God's.
Tomorrow go down against them; look, they are coming up by the ascent of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the wadi, before the face of the wilderness of Jeruel.
It is not for you to fight in this. Take your stand, stand and see the deliverance of Yahweh with you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed. Tomorrow go out before their face, and Yahweh is with you.
Jehoshaphat bowed low, face to the land, and all Judah and the dwellers of Jerusalem fell down before the face of Yahweh, to bow down to Yahweh.
The Levites, of the children of the Kohathites and of the children of the Korahites, stood up to praise Yahweh the God of Israel with a great voice, high up.
They rose early in the morning and went out to the wilderness of Tekoa; and as they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said: Listen to me, Judah and dwellers of Jerusalem. Believe in Yahweh your God, and you will be established; believe in his prophets, and succeed.
He advised the people, and set those who sing to Yahweh and those who praise to the splendor of holiness, in going forth to the face of that which is armed, and saying: Praise Yahweh, for his loyal love is forever.
At the time they began with a ringing cry and praise, Yahweh set men lying in wait against the children of Ammon, Moab and the mountain of Seir who were coming to Judah, and they were struck down.
The children of Ammon and Moab stood against the dwellers of the mountain of Seir, to put them under the ban and to wipe them out; and when they had finished with the dwellers of Seir, each helped in the destruction of his neighbor.
Judah came to the watchtower over the wilderness, and they turned to the horde, and look, they were corpses fallen to the land, with no one escaped.
Jehoshaphat and his people came to plunder their spoil, and found among them an abundance of goods, and corpses, and articles of desire, and stripped them off for themselves, more than they could carry; and they were three days plundering the spoil, for it was great.
On the fourth day they assembled in the vale of Berachah, for there they blessed Yahweh; therefore they have called the name of that place the vale of Berachah, to this day.
All the man of Judah and Jerusalem returned, and Jehoshaphat in their head, to return to Jerusalem in gladness, for Yahweh rejoiced them from their enemies.
They came to Jerusalem with harps and lyres and trumpets, to the house of Yahweh.
The fear of God was on all the kingdoms of the lands when they heard that Yahweh had fought against the enemies of Israel.
The kingdom of Jehoshaphat was quiet, and his God gave him rest all around.
Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah; he was thirty-five years old when he became king, and twenty-five years he reigned in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Azubah, daughter of Shilhi.
He walked in the way of his father Asa and did not turn aside from it, doing what was right in the eyes of Yahweh.
Only the high places were not removed, and the people still had not fixed their heart on the God of their fathers.
The rest of the words of Jehoshaphat, the first and the last, look, they are written in the words of Jehu son of Hanani, which was inserted in the scroll of the kings of Israel.
After this, Jehoshaphat king of Judah joined himself with Ahaziah king of Israel, who acted wickedly in so doing.
He allied himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish, and they made the ships in Ezion-geber.
Eliezer son of Dodavahu from Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying: Because you joined yourself with Ahaziah, Yahweh has broken through your works. And the ships were broken, and they were not able to go to Tarshish.
