2 Chronicles18

1Jehoshaphat had wealth and weightiness in abundance, and he became related by marriage to Ahab.

2After some years he went down to Ahab at Samaria, and Ahab slaughtered flock and cattle in abundance for him and for the people with him, and he incited him to go up against Ramoth-gilead.

3Ahab the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah: Will you go with me to Ramoth-gilead? And he said to him: I am as you are, and my people as your people, and we are with you in the war.

4And Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel: Please inquire today for the word of Yahweh.

5And the king of Israel gathered the prophets, four hundred men, and said to them: Shall we go against Ramoth-gilead to war, or shall I cease? And they said: Go up, and God will set it in the hand of the king.

6And Jehoshaphat said: Is there not a prophet of Yahweh here still, that we may inquire of him?

7And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat: There is still one man from whom to inquire of Yahweh, but I hate him, for he is not prophesying good over me; all his days it is evil. He is Micaiah son of Imlah. And Jehoshaphat said: Let the king not say so.

8And the king of Israel called to an official and said: Quickly, bring Micaiah son of Imlah.

9And the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah were sitting, each on his throne, clothed in garments, and sitting at a threshing floor at the entrance of the gate of Samaria; and all the prophets were prophesying before their faces.

10And Zedekiah son of Kenaanah made horns of iron for himself and said: This is what Yahweh says: With these you will gore Aram until you have finished them.

11And all the prophets were prophesying likewise, saying: Go up to Ramoth-gilead and succeed; Yahweh will set it in the hand of the king.

12And the messenger who had gone to summon Micaiah spoke to him, saying: Look, the words of the prophets, with one mouth, are good for the king; and please let your word be like one of them, and speak good.

13And Micaiah said: As Yahweh lives, surely whatever my God says, that I will speak.

14And he came to the king, and the king said to him: Micah, shall we go against Ramoth-gilead to war, or shall I cease? And he said: Go up and succeed; they will be set in your hand.

15And the king said to him: How many times must I make you swear that you will not speak to me anything but truth in the name of Yahweh?

16And he said: I saw all Israel scattered on the mountains, like a flock that has no shepherd; and Yahweh said: These have no lords; let them return, each to his house, in wholeness.

17And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat: Did I not say to you, that he will not prophesy good over me, but evil?

18And he said: Therefore hear the word of Yahweh: I saw Yahweh sitting on his throne, and all the host of the skies standing at his right hand and his left.

19And Yahweh said: Who will entice Ahab the king of Israel, so that he goes up and falls at Ramoth-gilead? And one was saying it this way, and another was saying it that way.

20And the breath came out and stood before the face of Yahweh and said: I will entice him. And Yahweh said to it: By what means?

21And it said: I will go out and be a breath of falsehood in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said: You will entice, and also you will prevail; go out and do so.

22And now, look, Yahweh has put a breath of falsehood in the mouth of these prophets of yours, and Yahweh has spoken evil against you.

23And Zedekiah son of Kenaanah came near and struck Micaiah on the cheek, and said: Which way did the breath of Yahweh pass from me to speak with you?

24And Micaiah said: Look, you will see on that day, when you go from room to room to hide yourself.

25And the king of Israel said: Take Micaiah and return him to Amon the official of the city, and to Joash the son of the king.

26And you will say: This is what the king says: Put this man in the house of the prison, and feed him bread of distress and water of distress until I return in wholeness.

27And Micaiah said: If you ever return in wholeness, Yahweh has not spoken by me. And he said: Listen, all you peoples.

28And the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah went up against Ramoth-gilead.

29And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat: I will disguise myself and go into the battle, but you, put on your garments. And the king of Israel disguised himself, and they went into the battle.

30And the king of Aram commanded the officials of the chariot which were to him, saying: You will not fight with the small, with the great, only with the king of Israel to his alone.

31It happened, when the officials of the chariotry saw Jehoshaphat, that they said: He is the king of Israel; and they surrounded him to fight. Then Jehoshaphat cried out, and Yahweh helped him, and God lured them away from him.

32It happened, when the officials of the chariotry saw that he was not the king of Israel, that they turned back from following him.

33Now a man drew his bow without aiming, and he struck the king of Israel between the joints and between the coat of mail. And he said to the charioteer: Turn your hand and bring me out of the camp, for I have been wounded.

34And the battle rose on that day, and the king of Israel was held upright in the chariot facing Aram until the evening; and he died at the time of the sun's going in.
