Samuel2

Hannah prayed and said, "My heart exults in Yahweh; my horn is high in Yahweh; my mouth is opened wide over my enemies, for I rejoice in your deliverance.

No one is holy like Yahweh, for there is none except you; and there is no rock like our God.

Do not multiply your speaking, so high, so high; let no arrogance go out of your mouth. For Yahweh is a God of knowledge, and by him deeds are weighed.

The bow of the mighty men is shattered, and those who stumble gird on strength.

The satisfied hire themselves out for bread, and the hungry have ceased; even the barren has borne seven, and she who has many sons languishes.

Yahweh puts to death and gives life; he brings down to Sheol, and brings up.

Yahweh makes poor and makes rich; he brings low, and also lifts high.

He raises up the poor from the dust; from the ash heap he lifts high the needy, to make them dwell with the noble, and a throne of weightiness he gives them as an inheritance; for to Yahweh belong the pillars of the land, and he set the world upon them.

He guards the feet of his faithful, but the wicked are silenced in darkness; for not by strength does a man prevail.

Yahweh—those who contend against him will be pressed down; over them in the skies he thunders. Yahweh judges the ends of the land; he gives strength to his king, and lifts high the horn of his anointed.

Elkanah went to Ramah, to his house, and the boy was serving Yahweh in the face of Eli the priest.

And the sons of Eli were worthless men; they did not know Yahweh.

And the manner of the priests with the people: every man who was sacrificing a sacrifice, the boy of the priest would come as the flesh boiled, with the fork of the three teeth in his hand.

He would thrust it into the cooking pot, or the kettle, or the caldron, or the skillet; all that the fork brought up, the priest would take for himself. Thus they did to all Israel, those who came there, to Shiloh.

Even before they turned to smoke the fat, the boy of the priest would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, "Give meat to roast for the priest; he will not accept boiled meat from you, but only raw."

The man said to him, "Let them surely turn the fat to smoke today, then take for yourself whatever your being desires." But he said, "No; for now you will give it, and if not I will take it by force."

And the sin of the young men was very great in the face of Yahweh; for the men spurned the grain offering of Yahweh.

And Samuel was serving in the face of Yahweh, a boy girded with an ephod of linen.

His mother would make him a little robe and bring it up to him from year to year, when she went up with her husband to sacrifice the yearly sacrifice.

Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife, and said, "May Yahweh set for you seed from this woman in place of the request that was asked of Yahweh." Then they went to his place.

For Yahweh visited Hannah, and she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters; and the boy Samuel became great with Yahweh.

Now Eli was very old, and he heard all that his sons were doing to all Israel, and how they lay with the women who served at the door of the tent of meeting.

He said to them, "Why do you do words like these, which I hear—these wicked words of yours—from all the people?"

No, my sons, no; for the report is not good which I heard, passing over the people of Yahweh.

If a person sins against a person, God will mediate for him; but if a person sins against Yahweh, who will intercede for him?" But they would not listen to the voice of their father, for Yahweh desired to put them to death.

And the boy Samuel went on growing, and was good, both with Yahweh and with men.

A man of God came to Eli and said to him, "Thus says Yahweh: Did I truly show myself to the house of your father when they were in Egypt, belonging to the house of Pharaoh?

I chose him out of all the tribes of Israel for myself as priest, to go up to my altar, to turn to smoke incense, to carry an ephod before me; and I gave to the house of your father all the fire offerings of the children of Israel.

Why do you kick at my sacrifice and my grain offering, which I commanded for the dwelling place, and honor your sons above me, to feed yourselves on the first part of every grain offering of Israel, my people?

Therefore, the utterance of Yahweh, the God of Israel: I surely said, 'Your house and the house of your father will walk about before my face forever.' But now, the utterance of Yahweh—far be it from me! For those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me will be lightly esteemed.

Look, days are coming when I will hew off your arm and the arm of the house of your father, so that there will not be an old man in your house.

And you will look at the distress of the dwelling place, amid all the good that he does for Israel, and there will not be an old man in your house all the days.

Yet a man of yours I will not cut off from my altar, to make fail your eyes and to grieve your being; and all the increase of your house will die as men.

And this will be for you the sign, which will come to your two sons, to Hophni and Phinehas: on one day they will die, both of them.

And I will raise up for myself a faithful priest who will act according to what is in my heart and in my living being; and I will build him a sure house, and he will walk about before my anointed all the days.

And it will be that everyone who remains in your house will come to bow down to him for a piece of silver and a round loaf of bread, and will say, “Attach me, please, to one of the priesthoods, to eat a morsel of bread.”
