Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and everything about how he had killed all the prophets with the sword.
Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, "May God do so, and more also, if as the time to come I will not put your living being as the living being of the one from them."
He saw, and he rose, and went for his living being, and came to Beer-sheba which belongs to Judah, and there he settled his boy.
And he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat under a single broom plant, and asked that his living being might die. He said, "Enough now, Yahweh! Take my living being, for I am no better than my fathers."
He lay down and slept under a single broom plant; and look, a messenger was touching him, and said to him, "Rise, eat."
He looked, and look, at his head was a cake on glowing coals and a jug of water; and he ate and drank, and lay down again.
The messenger of Yahweh came back a second time and touched him, and said, "Rise, eat, for the journey is too great for you."
He rose, and ate, and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to the mountain of God, Horeb.
He went in there, into the cavern, and spent the night there; and look, the word of Yahweh came to him, and said to him, "What is there for you here, Elijah?"
He said, "I have been very zealous for Yahweh, the God of hosts, for the children of Israel have forsaken your covenant, torn down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword; and I alone am left, and they are seeking my living being to take it away."
He said, "Go out and stand on the mountain before Yahweh." And look, Yahweh was passing by; and a great and strong wind was tearing apart the mountains and breaking the crags in pieces before Yahweh; Yahweh was not in the wind. And after the wind, an earthquake; Yahweh was not in the earthquake.
And after the earthquake, a fire; Yahweh was not in the fire. And after the fire, the sound of a thin whisper.
And it happened, when Elijah heard, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out and stood at the doorway of the cavern; and look, a voice came to him and said, "What is there for you here, Elijah?"
He said, "I have been very zealous for Yahweh, the God of hosts, for the children of Israel have forsaken your covenant, torn down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword; and I alone am left, and they are seeking my living being to take it away."
Yahweh said to him, "Go, turn back on your way, toward the wilderness of Damascus; and you will arrive, and you will anoint Hazael as king over Aram.
And Jehu son of Nimshi you will anoint as king over Israel; and Elisha son of Shaphat, from Abel-meholah, you will anoint as prophet in your place.
And it will be that the one who escapes from the sword of Hazael, Jehu will put to death; and the one who escapes from the sword of Jehu, Elisha will put to death."
And I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bent to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.
He went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve pairs before him, and he himself was with the twelfth; Elijah passed on to him and threw his mantle over him.
He left the cattle and ran after Elijah, and said, "Please let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will go after you." And he said to him, "Go, turn back, for what have I done to you?"
He turned back from following him, and took the pair of cattle and sacrificed it, and with the implements of the cattle he cooked the flesh and gave it to the people, and they ate; then he rose and went after Elijah and served him.
