And many days went by, and the word of Yahweh came to Elijah in the third year, saying: Go, appear to Ahab, and I will put rain on the face of the ground.
So Elijah went to appear to Ahab. Now the famine was hard in Samaria.
And Ahab called to Obadiah, which was over the house; and Obadiah was fearing Yahweh exceedingly.
And it happened, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of Yahweh, that Obadiah took a hundred prophets and hid them, fifty men to a cave, and provided them with food and water.
And Ahab said to Obadiah: Go into the land to all the springs of water and to all the wadis. Perhaps we will find grass and keep the horses and mules alive, and not have to cut off any of the livestock.
And they divided among themselves the land to pass through it: Ahab went by one road by himself, and Obadiah went by another road by himself.
And it happened that Obadiah was on the way, and look, Elijah was coming to meet him; and he recognized him, fell on his face, and said, "Is it you, my lord Elijah?"
And he said to him: It is I. Go, say to your master: Look, Elijah is here.
And he said: What have I sinned, that you are giving your servant into the hand of Ahab, to put me to death?
As Yahweh your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my master has not sent there to seek you; and when they said, He is not here, he made the kingdom and the nation swear that it had not found you.
And now you are saying, Go, say to your lord: Look, Elijah is here.
And it will be that I go from you, and the breath of Yahweh will carry you off to where I do not know; and I will come to tell Ahab, and he will not find you, and he will kill me. Yet your slave has feared Yahweh from my youth.
Was it not told to my lord what I did when Jezebel killed the prophets of Yahweh, that I hid a hundred men from the prophets of Yahweh, fifty men to a cave, and supplied them with food and water?
And now you are saying, Go, say to your lord: Look, Elijah is here! He will kill me.
And Elijah said: As Yahweh of hosts lives, before whose face I stand, surely today I will appear to him.
And Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him; and Ahab went to meet Elijah.
And it happened, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said to him: Is it you, this troubler of Israel?
And he said: I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father's household have, by your forsaking the commands of Yahweh and going after the Baals.
And now send, gather to me all Israel at Mount Carmel, with the prophets of the Baal, four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the Asherah, four hundred, who eat at Jezebel's table.
And Ahab sent among all the children of Israel and gathered the prophets to Mount Carmel.
And Elijah drew near to all the people and said: How long will you keep limping on two divided thoughts? If Yahweh is God, walk after him; and if the Baal, walk after him. And the people did not answer him a word.
And Elijah said to the people: I alone am left, a prophet of Yahweh, and the prophets of the Baal are four hundred and fifty men.
Let them give us two young bulls, and let them choose one bull for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, but they will put no fire; and I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood, but I will put no fire.
And you call on the name of your God, and I will call on the name of Yahweh; and the God who answers by fire, he is God. And all the people answered and said: The word is good.
And Elijah said to the prophets of the Baal: Choose one bull for yourselves and prepare it first, for you are the many; and call on the name of your God, but put no fire.
And they took the bull that was given to them, and prepared it, and called on the name of the Baal from morning until noon, saying: O Baal, answer us! But there was no sound and no one answering. And they limped around the altar that had been made.
And it came about at noon that Elijah mocked them and said: Call out in a loud voice, for he is a god! He is musing, or he has withdrawn, or he is on a journey; perhaps he is asleep, and he will wake.
And they called out in a loud voice and cut themselves according to their prescribed way, with swords and with spears, until blood poured out over them.
And it came about, when noon had passed, they prophesied until the time of bringing up the grain offering; but there was no sound, no one answering, and no attention.
And Elijah said to all the people: Draw near to me. And all the people drew near to him; and he mended the altar of Yahweh that had been torn down.
And Elijah took twelve stones, by the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of Yahweh had come, saying: Israel will be your name.
And he built the stones into an altar in the name of Yahweh, and made a trench, the size of a receptacle for two seahs of seed, all around the altar.
And he arranged the wood, and cut the bull in pieces, and laid it on the wood. And he said: Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood.
And he said: Repeat it. And they repeated it. And he said: Do it a third time. And they did it a third time.
And the waters went around the altar; and he also filled the trench with water.
And it happened, at the time of bringing up the grain offering, that Elijah the prophet drew near and said: O Yahweh, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, today let it be known that you are God in Israel, and that I am your slave, and that at your word I have acted on all these words.
Answer me, Yahweh, answer me, so that this people may know that you, Yahweh, are God, and that you have turned their heart back.
And the fire of Yahweh fell and ate up the burnt offering, the wood, the stones, and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench.
And all the people saw, and fell on their faces and said: Yahweh, he is God! Yahweh, he is God!
And Elijah said to them: Seize the prophets of the Baal; let not one of them escape. And they seized them; and Elijah brought them down to the wadi of Kishon and slaughtered them there.
And Elijah said to Ahab: Go up, eat and drink, for there is a sound of the roar of the rain.
And Ahab came up to eat and to drink; and Elijah came up to the head of the Carmel, and crouched down to the land, and put his face between his knees.
And he said to his boy: Come up, look the way of the sea. And he came up and looked, and said: There is no thing. And he said: Return, seven times.
And it was in the seventh that he said: Behold, a cloud, small as the palm of a man, coming up from the sea. And he said: Come up, say to Ahab: Yoke and come down, that the rain will not close you.
And it happened, in a little while, that the skies grew dark with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain; and Ahab rode and went to Jezreel.
And the hand of Yahweh was on Elijah, and he cinched up his waist and ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.
