And look, a man of God came from Judah by the word of Yahweh to Beth-el, as Jeroboam stood at the altar to turn sacrifices to smoke.
And he called out against the altar by the word of Yahweh and said, Altar, altar, thus says Yahweh: Look, a son is about to be born to the house of David, Josiah by name; and on you he will sacrifice the priests of the high places who make smoke on you, and people will burn human bones on you.
And he gave a wonder that day, saying, This is the wonder that Yahweh has spoken: Look, the altar will be torn apart, and the ashes that are on it will be poured out.
And it happened, when the king heard the word of the man of God, which he called out against the altar in Beth-el, that Jeroboam stretched out his hand from the altar, saying, Seize him! And his hand dried up that he had stretched out against him, and he could not draw it back to himself.
And the altar was torn apart, and the ashes were poured out from the altar, like the wonder that the man of God had given by the word of Yahweh.
And the king answered and said to the man of God, Entreat the face of Yahweh your God, please, and pray on my behalf, that my hand may return to me. And the man of God entreated the face of Yahweh, and the hand of the king returned to him and was as it was at first.
And the king spoke to the man of God, Come home with me and sustain yourself, and I will give you a gift.
And the man of God said to the king, Even if you gave me half of your house, I would not go with you, and I would not eat bread, and I would not drink water in this place.
For so he commanded me by the word of Yahweh, saying, You shall not eat bread, and you shall not drink water, and you shall not return by the way that you went.
And he went by another way, and did not return by the way by which he had come to Beth-el.
Now one old prophet was living in Beth-el, and his son came and recounted to him all the work that the man of God had done that day in Beth-el; the words that he had spoken to the king, they recounted to their father.
And their father spoke to them, Which way did he go? And his sons saw the way that the man of God who came from Judah had gone.
And he said to his sons, Saddle the donkey for me; and they saddled the donkey for him, and he rode on it.
And he went after the man of God and found him sitting under the terebinth, and said to him, Are you the man of God who came from Judah? And he said, I am.
And he said to him, Come home with me and eat bread.
And he said, I cannot turn back with you or go in with you, and I will not eat bread, and I will not drink water with you in this place.
For a word came to me by the word of Yahweh: You shall not eat bread, and you shall not drink water there; you shall not turn back to go by the way that you went in it.
And he said to him, I too am a prophet, like you, and a messenger spoke to me by the word of Yahweh, saying, Bring him back with you to your house, that he may eat bread and drink water. He was lying to him.
And he turned back with him, and ate bread in his house, and drank water.
And it happened, as they were sitting at the table, that the word of Yahweh came to the prophet who had brought him back.
And he called out to the man of God who came from Judah, saying, Thus says Yahweh: Because you rebelled against the mouth of Yahweh, and did not keep the commandment that commanded you Yahweh your God,
and you turned back and ate bread and drank water in the place of which he said to you, Do not eat bread and do not drink water; your carcass shall not come to the grave of your fathers.
And it happened, after he had eaten bread and after he had drunk, that he saddled the donkey for him, for the prophet whom he had brought back.
And he went, and a lion found him in the way and killed him; and his carcass was thrown down in the way, with the donkey standing beside it and the lion standing beside the carcass.
And look, men passing by saw the carcass thrown down in the way, and the lion standing beside the carcass; and they came and spoke of it in the city where the old prophet lived.
And the prophet who had brought him back from the way heard and said, It is the man of God who rebelled against the mouth of Yahweh; so Yahweh gave him to the lion, and it broke him and killed him, according to the word of Yahweh that he had spoken to him.
And he spoke to his sons, saying, Saddle the donkey for me; and they saddled it.
And he went and found his carcass thrown down in the way, with the donkey and the lion standing beside the carcass; the lion had not eaten the carcass and had not broken the donkey.
And the prophet lifted the carcass of the man of God and laid it on the donkey and brought it back; and the old prophet came to the city to mourn and to bury him.
And he laid his corpse in his own grave, and they mourned over him: alas, my brother!
And it happened, after he buried him, that he said to his sons, saying, When I die, bury me in the grave where the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones.
For the word that he cried out by the word of Yahweh against the altar that is in Beth-el, and against all the houses of the high places that are in the cities of Samaria, will surely come to pass.
After this word Jeroboam did not turn back from his evil way, but he again made priests of the high places from the ends of the people; whoever desired it, he filled his hand, and he became a priest of the high places.
And by this word it became sin for the house of Jeroboam, to efface it and to wipe it from the face of the ground.
