Kings11

King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women, besides the daughter of Pharaoh: Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women.

from the nations of which Yahweh had said to the children of Israel, "You shall not go in among them; and they shall not come in among you; they will surely bend your heart after their gods." Solomon clung to these in love.

He had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines, and his wives bent his heart.

It happened that at the time of Solomon's old age his wives bent his heart after other gods, and his heart was not complete with Yahweh his God, like the heart of David his father.

For Solomon went after Astarte, the god of the Sidonians, and after Milcom, the detested thing of the Ammonites.

Solomon did what was evil in the eyes of Yahweh, and did not fully follow Yahweh as David his father had.

Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh, the detested thing of Moab, on the mountain that faces Jerusalem, and for Molech, the detested thing of the children of Ammon.

So he did for all his foreign wives, who made offerings smoke and sacrificed to their gods.

Yahweh was angry with Solomon because his heart had turned aside from Yahweh, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice.

He had commanded him about this matter, not to go after other gods; but he did not keep what Yahweh had commanded.

And Yahweh said to Solomon, "Because this has been with you and you have not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom away from you and give it to your slave.

Only in your days I will not do it, for the sake of David your father; from the hand of your son I will tear it away.

Only I will not tear away all the kingdom; one tribe I will give to your son, for the sake of David my slave and for the sake of Jerusalem, which I have chosen.

And Yahweh raised up an adversary for Solomon, Hadad the Edomite; he was from the seed of the king in Edom.

It happened, when David was in Edom, when Joab the captain of the host came up to bury the slain, that he struck down every male in Edom —

for six months Joab dwelled there, and all Israel, until he had cut off every male in Edom.

But Hadad fled, he and Edomite men, some of the slaves of his father, with him, to go to Egypt; and Hadad was a young boy.

They rose from Midian and went to Paran, and took men with them from Paran, and went to Egypt, to Pharaoh the king of Egypt, who gave him a house and commanded food for him, and gave him land.

And Hadad found favor in the eyes of Pharaoh exceedingly, and he gave him a wife, the sister of his own wife, the sister of Tahpenes the queen.

And the sister of Tahpenes bore him Genubath his son, and Tahpenes weaned him in the midst of the house of Pharaoh; and Genubath was in the house of Pharaoh, among the children of Pharaoh.

And Hadad heard in Egypt that David had lain down with his fathers, and that Joab the captain of the host had died; and Hadad said to Pharaoh, “Send me away, so that I may go to my own land.”

And Pharaoh said to him, “What do you lack with me, that here you are seeking to go to your own land?” And he said, “No, but you must really send me away.”

And God raised up for him an adversary, Rezon the son of Eliada, who had fled from Hadadezer the king of Zobah, his lord.

And he gathered men around him, and became captain of a band, when David killed them; and they went to Damascus and dwelled in it, and reigned in Damascus.

He was an adversary to Israel all the days of Solomon, along with the evil that Hadad did; and he loathed Israel and reigned over Aram.

And Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephrathite from Zeredah — and the name of his mother was Zeruah, a woman, a widow — a slave of Solomon, raised his hand against the king.

And this was the word on why he raised his hand against the king: Solomon built the Millo, and closed up the breach of the city of David his father.

And the man Jeroboam was a mighty man of valor; and Solomon saw the young man, that he was doing the work, and he appointed him over all the burden-bearing of the house of Joseph.

It happened at that time, when Jeroboam went forth from Jerusalem, that Ahijah the Shilonite, the prophet, found him on the way; and he had covered himself in a new cloak, and the two of them were alone in the field.

And Ahijah seized the new cloak that was on him, and tore it into twelve pieces.

And he said to Jeroboam, “Take for yourself ten pieces; for thus says Yahweh the God of Israel: ‘See, I am about to tear the kingdom from the hand of Solomon, and I will give you the ten tribes.

And the one tribe will belong to him, for the sake of my slave David, and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city that I have chosen from all the tribes of Israel —

because they have forsaken me and have bowed down to Astarte the god of the Sidonians, to Chemosh the god of Moab, and to Milcom the god of the children of Ammon; and they have not walked in my ways, doing what is right in my eyes — my statutes and my justice — as David his father did.

But I will not take all the kingdom from his hand; for I will set him as prince all the days of his life, for the sake of David my slave, whom I chose, who kept my commandments and my statutes.

But I will take the kingdom from the hand of his son, and I will give it to you, the ten tribes.

And to his son I will give one tribe, so that there may be a lamp for David my slave all the days before my face in Jerusalem, the city that I chose for myself to put my name there.

And you I will take, and you shall reign over all that your being desires, and you shall be king over Israel.

And it shall be, if you hear all that I command you, and you walk in my ways, and you do what is right in my eyes, by keeping my statutes and my commandments, just as David my slave did, then I will be with you, and I will build for you a sure house, just as I built for David, and I will give you Israel.

And I will afflict the seed of David on account of this, but not for all the days.’”

And Solomon sought to put Jeroboam to death; but Jeroboam rose and fled to Egypt, to Shishak the king of Egypt, and he was in Egypt until the death of Solomon.

And the rest of the words of Solomon, and all that he did, and his wisdom — are they not written in the scroll of the words of Solomon?

And the days that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel were forty years.

And Solomon lay down with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David his father; and Rehoboam his son reigned in his place.
