¹And the Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled from the face of the Philistines and fell slain on the mountain of Gilboa.

²The Philistines pursued closely after Saul and after his sons; the Philistines struck down Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malki-shua, the sons of Saul.

³And the battle grew heavy upon Saul, and those who shoot with the bow found him, and he writhed from those who shoot.

⁴And Saul said to the carrier of his weapons, "Draw out your sword and pierce me through with it, lest these uncircumcised men come and deal wantonly with me." But the carrier of his weapons was not willing, for he was afraid greatly. And Saul took the sword and fell upon it.

⁵And the carrier of his weapons saw that Saul was dead, and he also fell upon the sword and died.

⁶And Saul died, and three of his sons, and all his house; together they died.

⁷And every man of Israel who was in the valley saw that they had fled, and that Saul and his sons had died, and they abandoned their cities and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelled in them.

⁸And it came about on the next day that the Philistines came to strip the slain, and they found Saul and his sons fallen on the mountain of Gilboa.

⁹And they stripped him, and carried off his head and his weapons, and sent all around the land of the Philistines to bear the news to their idols and to the people.

¹⁰And they put his weapons in the house of their God, and they fixed his skull in the house of Dagon.

¹¹And all Jabesh of Gilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul.

¹²And every man of strength rose, and they lifted up the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh, and buried their bones under the terebinth in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.

¹³And Saul died for his unfaithfulness, in which he had acted unfaithfully against Yahweh, concerning the word of Yahweh that he did not keep, and also for asking a necromancer, in order to inquire.

¹⁴He did not inquire of Yahweh; so he put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse.
